Recruiting 2013

Awe yes.... The yearly "our transfer is a secret NBA ninja thread"

Let me get this straight. This kid is one year of college basketball away from the NBA so he decides to transfer? Furthermore, he decides to go to OU? A team that was imploding when he made his decision. I think people are getting way ahead of themselves with this kid. I hope he makes the NBA but I can name a lot of kids that have played well in college and did not make the NBA.

I remember Jabari Brown was going to be this dominant center. I remember Angelo Hamilton was the next Jordan. I remember when Calvin Curry could easily knock down 26 footers. These were things fans said based on practices, warm-ups and a couple of games. All of those guys helped OU but none of those statements were accurate.

All of these type of contributions are pretty funny. I thought Sam's judgement was trusted in the area of player evaluation.

Talent is talent. He is a 6'9 forward with good athleticism and skills. His game translates better to the NBA than it does in college. If he was still in Europe scouts would be drooling over him.

What position does a 6'9" 214lbs man play in the NBA? Give me some examples of guys built like this succeeding in the NBA and please don't say Kevin Durrant because he is by far an exception and every college basketball fan in the country knew who he was during his one and only year in college. I had honestly never heard of M'Baye prior to his deciding to transfer to OU.

I fully intend to be one M'Baye biggest fans. I want this kid to make the NBA. I want him to be a lottery pick but I think some of you younger guys are building this kid up a bit prematurely. Honestly, I hope M'Baye makes me look like the biggest fool ever. However, I just don't see how OU has the luxury of playing him at the 3 or 2 next season.

He will be a three in the NBA, whenever I've watched him in practice he's shot the ball well more often than not.

Honestly, I think there is a decent chance M'Baye is one and done here, then to the Association.

So you think he is a first-rounder?

I will take that bet.

I don't remotely understand statements like his game translates better to the NBA than college. Do you think he will face weaker defense in the NBA? Do you think he can hit 23 foot shots at a higher percentage than 19? Are the 7 foot centers in the NBA going to be softer than 6'9" centers in the NBA? Are the defensive swithces going to be slower in the NBA? Are the role players in the NBA going to be worse defensive players? I truly don't understand why people say things like this and Honestly can't really think of examples where this is true. I can think of numerous examples where guys were lottery picks and did not pan out in the NBA. I can think of numerous examples where guys were big time scorers in college and are nothing more than bench players in the NBA. I admit there are some guys that leave college early and continue to improve but M'Baye is not a kid that left college early. Even if he leaves after next season he will have spent four years in college.

I agree talent is talent but it is illogical in my opinion to say what you said. Nothing gets easier at the next level.

Thanks, Sawyer. In other words, if OU chooses to leave Cole on an academic scholarship after his first year, that ship can be added to the totals we'll have to give in the 2013 class.

I see that as very good news. It's a nice option to have if he develops into a player who can contribute at some point. Either way, he will almost certainly add to our GPA. When a really smart kid like Cole agrees to fill a spot on our roster as a walk on, we tend to forget the importance of giving the team GPA a boost.

FWIW, players using an academic scholarship would be treated like any other walkon, which means they would miss out on quite a few other perks besides just free tuition and room/board. Just because he can doesn't mean he will want to or should (really, who needs 14 scholarship basketball players, anyway?).

I don't know this for a fact, but I would assume a walk-on's GPA wouldn't count towards the team GPA. If it did, what would keep every team from having some kid from the math club come out and watch practice and calling him a walk-on? Does anyone know one way or the other???
