Refs called "defense" of Reaves & Cunningham completely different.

Re: Refs called "defense" of Reaves & Cunningham completely different.

I think that’s a little unfair. He’s the only guy on the team that can consistently get to the rim. He’s also the only guy who can consistently create for others. Yes, he struggles at times with shot selection, but that often comes with the territory for an aggressive player on a team where said player is really the only one that can create off the dribble.

Harmon is rather good at it, but he relies on the opportunities presented to him which is different than Austin.

Physical harassment of Cunningham was illegal. Physical harassment of Reaves was good D. That wasn't a factor in the game. That was the game.
I don't post much anymore, this is one of the reasons why.
Haven't seen much or any games since the win in Austin, but the OU team
doesn't look like the same team to me. I only saw about 70% of this game and in
my honest opinion osu had the better starting 5...at least on Saturday

Yep, it's the kind of thing I laugh at when I see it on other teams' message boards. Pathetic.

OU did not lose today because of refs. Of course there were missed calls. But nothing significant enough to swing the game. They lost because we couldn’t cash in on good defense due to our rebounding woes and because the other team had a superior talent. More the latter.

It went into overtime, how much does it take... Yes I'm picking but here is another, the reviewed out of bounds play very late in regulation, in front of the state bench. Regular angle didn't show anything but they showed a corner angle that clearly showed Harmon's hand not close to the ball. The state player lost the ball out of bounds.

Agreed that was crap... but the reality is getting out rebounded by 14/16? Several offensive boards that pokes converted and us shooting poorly ( we did lead the league at one point) from the line is what it was.

My frustration was trying to stop Cade with everyone playing 5 ft off their man to try and double/triple team him...didn’t matter he wasn’t going to be stopped...(much) but that left others wide open for shots/passes/long rebounds.

Here’s the thing though; fans ONLY recall the calls that may have gone AGAINST their team. They then use those examples to illustrate how those bad calls could have swung the outcome of a close game. But that basically assumes that there weren’t any calls in the game that offset the examples— rarely, if ever, is that true.

A guy like Cunningham— honestly, he’s probably drawing a foul close to 100% of the time he drives. He is physically superior to anyone that guards him. The only way to combat it is to be as crafty as you can and take some chances. If you slo-mo all of his drives, he’s either instigating or drawing contact pretty much every single time he takes the ball off the dribble. Over the course of a game he will probably draw some calls on non-fouls or even some on plays where the foul should have gone on him. But it goes the other way too, and no one mentions that. And honestly, it should NOT be “even” at the end of a given game. CC is a top NBA pick being guarded by very capable (but vastly inferior) players every time out. He’s going to win more than he loses; and the whistles will reflect that.

I agree with part of that. It wasn’t like we were doubling hard, we were just sagging off in case we needed to help. I would like to see either double hard or don’t; and preferably a mixture of both. I also hope to see more Kuath to try to protect the rim; plus he creates matchup problems for them.

Bingo! Our help defense was designed to stop Cade if he brought the ball in close to the basket. Unlike Austin, who continued to drive inside hoping to get fouled if he couldn’t score, Cade scored most of his points on mid and long range jump shots. He made multiple moves before he took some of those shots, so it’s not like there was no time to bring help if that is what our players were told to do.

I’ve got a feeling we’ll see a vastly different defense to contain Cunningham this time around.

Agree and also hope you are right about LK doing things a little differently.
