With all the Frank Martin love going on around here I thought this might be of some interest. The following stat comes from this article:
"Twenty-two years ago Kansas State had more NCAA wins than the University of Kansas, and somehow that kind of got away from Kansas State," Martin said. "How? Why? I don't know. It's not my problem.

"My challenge and our challenge and these kids' challenge has been to reconnect with that incredible history ... It makes me proud that these kids have embraced that, to get that passion of K State basketball going again."

You've got to be kidding me! So I went and looked it up. Lo and behold......it's not quite true, but it's close. KU actually passed K-State in NCAA wins in the early 80s.

NCAA Tournament Wins through the completion of the '82 season:

K-State: 21 wins
Kansas: 20 wins

I found that shocking. We've always been told the Chickenhawks were God's gift to the sport. But hell, I was born in 1982, and I came into this world with KU being the second best program in Kansas! And even that's debatable because Wichita State had just beaten KU in the Sweet 16 of the '81 Tournament.

DISCLAIMER: this information was gathered using Wikipedia's postings of the brackets and results through SHRP Sports. It DOES NOT factor in wins that would've been earned in consolation games such as the old 3rd place games they used to play at the Final Four and regional finals sites.

the quote just says ncaa wins...is it talking tourney wins like you posted or all time wins

Wow, even more impressive if it's all time IMO...and it's impressive enough just talking tourney wins...

there's some homework for you '04

I just found out today, but if KSU wins tomorrow it will be either their 5th or 6th final four.

I didn't think they had more than 1 final four...so I was surprised to hear that stat.

Lots of good coaches in Manhattan -- Tex Winters, Jack Hartman, Lon Kruger, Cotton Fitzsimmons.

For those of you younger posters who've never heard of Tex Winters. He was Phil Jackson's top assistant in Chicago and in LA...not sure if he's still coaching with Phil or if he's retired.

Cotton Fitzsimmons was the coach of the Phoenix Suns in the late 80's and early 90's.

Here is a cool link on espn.com where you can look up any school's NCAA tournament history, compare any two schools side by side, and look at the brackets of every NCAA tournament since 1939. Maybe others have seen it, but it has a lot of good information.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/history/_/team1/7024

This one is updated through the 1st two rounds of this year's tournament.

The year after Wilt and KU lost to NC in the NCAA final, 1957, KU came did not win the Big 7/8 and didn't make the NCAA. K-State had a better team with Bob Boozer and Jack Parr up front.

Tex had a stroke last April while attending a KSU reunion in Manhatten, he is still alive, but looks like he may have retired after the Lakers 2002 season. He is a good one, hope he does well with his recovery.
