Rhode comment on Buzz Williams and OU

Kelvin Sampson finished 4th in the pac 10 once and 5th or lower the rest of his years there.

Yeah but some of his early teams really struggled to get into the tourny and then they were one and done. Let's see if we can do better than that. I want to win a title here. Maybe we can find the next billy donavan....i don't think that's Buzz

14 loses this year. not all coming from the big east. why would you want a guy that's not in the top half of his conference regardless of how tough the conference is? that's like getting a 7th place SEC coach to coach our football team because he came from a difficult conference

Here were his 14 losses:

#1 Duke by 5.
#18 Gonzaga by 3.
#13 Wisconsin by 5.
#24 Vanderbilt by 1.
#5 Pitt by 8.
#17 Louisville by 1.
#16 Notre Dame by 5.
#5 UConn by 8.
#12 Villanova by 5.
#11 Georgetown by 9.
#18 St. Johns by 12.
Cincinnati by 7. (tournament team)
Seton Hall by 13. (only bad team)
#14 Louisville by 25.

There are only 3 losses on that list you could consider bad losses.

Marquette's schedule featured 17 games against RPI top 50 teams.
That's exactly one half of their schedule against the RPI top 50.

I couldn't even begin to imagine what OU's record would have been with that schedule lol

I'm concerned about their record getting worse every year with Buzz as the coach.

I don't think his teams have really gotten worse though. The Big East has turned into easily the toughest conference, and his team, without the resources and history of some of those teams, is still winning 20 games. Nothing to sneeze at.

Plus, he has to recruit nationally, not because of the outstanding recruiting rep that Marquette has, but because they have to reach out to get away from the intense local competition for recruits. At OU, he'd be able to recruit closer to home and use his recruiting time and budget more effectively.

I don't know that he'd be a guaranteed success here (I don't know if you can ever say that about anybody, anywhere), but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed by the hire if it happens. Seems like a very solid hire to me.

Traveler why not on Buzz? Is it an experience thing?

I'm personally trying to wrap my head around Buzz, and can't make up my mind if I like him or not. I like his passion and his teams play hard in a tough conference, but I just don't know enough about him at this point.

Besides his coaching record and recruiting ties, I love the passion he displays when he coaches. The big 12 lacks coaches with personality. He would certainly be one.

Marquette is a basketball school. OU isn't. It's easier to recruit there than to OU. Besides, it's all about the coach when it comes to recruiting so if Marquette hasn't had good recruiting the last few years I'd say it's the coach.

Stop promoting this falsehood. I would imagine we have more tradition, a history of getting better recruits, and more money. While fan support in bad times can be awful, it can be awesome during good seasons. I was there when it was.

^Additionally...
Marquette HAS had good recruiting under Williams.
They were #14 in recruiting rank last season, and the other finalist for Cam Clark.

Marquette does have a national title and they don't have a football team. But, they are also second fiddle in their own state to Wisky.

While they have a National Title is from before I was born and I am not exactly a young guy anymore. We have been to 4 Final Fours and had a run from 83-mid 2000s rivaled only by the likes of UNC, in terms of consecutive post-season appearances.

Marquette's last Final Four appearance was in 2003
OU's was in 2002.

Not saying that Marquette has a better program than OU's because I don't think they are, but they aren't significantly lower than OU's.

And I was born in '76, so Marquette's title was in my lifetime. Just not my viewing lifetime. They also have a runner-up finish.

Yeah, who would want Urban Meyer?

(Aub, Ark, LSU, Bama, MSU, SCar, Fla, for those keeping track)

It's never been awesome at OU even during great years.
