RIP ouhoops.com

soon this board will be gone and all thats left will be the double secret OU Homer board.

It was only a matter of time.....the "true fan" argument. So a true fan can not make a reasonable conclusion, assumption, or inference because we as fans don't have enough information or knowledge of the situation?

We all have eyes. Some of us have experience at the collegiate level and even more of us have been around the game for decades. IMHO, I believe the above items at least qualify for a discussion of team facets (good or bad). Yes, there are a few crazy comments on here after some losses that I disagree with....but I'm not sure that makes someone less of a fan.....just more emotional in many cases. My point is that when we dictate who is a true fan and who isn't (without knowing their heart, background, etc.) based upon how they react to a loss, I'm not sure that is the best indicator....just my .02 cents.

AMEN...here are my credentials.

Watch many hours of basketball, from K to college, some pro (not a huge fan)
coached like most dad's my kids from K through middle school (our school district didn't have sanctioned sports)
coached HS girls 4 yrs (Fr 1, JV 3 - went to state our last year)
coached HS boys 4 yrs (Soph 4 - asst V as well)
coached MS girls 1 yr
coached son's HS off-season baseball team, securing several scholarships, his to a Juco D1.
daughter walked on to Juco D1 for basketball, D1 for rowing.

does that qualify me enough as a true fan?

oh, I've followed OU since about 7 yrs old (53 now) and actually followed OU basketball since the Wayman days.

:)

I get on because not many OU fans in my woods. It's an emotional connection, sports are. I enjoy the discussion...good and bad.

I've had a couple people express interest in taking it over. I haven't forward on that yet but will after the season and am confident one of them will workout and keep it going.

I sure hope so. It's not always perfect but it's a great place to follow recruiting etc... I'd be pretty bummed to see it go.

When a team goes from 14-1 and a #4 ranking to 16-9 and out of the top 25 (which we'll be in the next poll), you will get fans who want to use a Message Board to "vent". I call it "human nature." Please find me a single college or pro fan base of any sport which has a turnaround like that which their fans are all calm and collected throughout. In reality, you won't. I'm actually amazed by the few number of posts AdaSooner, Usedtobe1 and myself have had to edit or delete due to posters getting out of hand.

We all have our "hot button issues" with what's going on with this team. I'm no different. I've been saying that if things don't get better, I would like Coach Kruger to upgrade his staff - most importantly, bring in an assistant who specializes in defense. Is my logic misplaced or wrong altogether? Perhaps, but who cares. This is a Message Board and topics like this are perfectly normal. Carry on.

I think the vast majority of us are fine seeing people post something critical of the coaches or even, if reasonable and not personal, the players. As many of you note, that's a big part of what message boards are about. It is, however, annoying to see certain posters who never say a positive word when things are going well, but chime in like experts when things turn south. But obviously there isn't much you can do about that. I value the info that certain posters provide enough to put up with the trolls and people who just like to bash the team.

Agreed on all counts. Very well said. Some people get pleasure from this team's struggles because it then validates the complaining they've done previously and then only pop in to say, "See...told ya so!"

Some things on message boards never change.. There has always been, and likely will continue to be, a group of posters who never seem to have anything to say when things are going well. For reasons I have never understood, they only show up when the team is having a bad game or after a loss to tell everyone why, as if we didn’t already know.

It’s annoying and frustrating, but it’s been that way for as long as I have moderated fan boards. I was a mod on OUInsider for two to three years before this board was launched in late 2008. Trust me, it was a lot worse over there. It was worse here in the early years, too, when this board was more active and growing fast.

Having said all of that, I would put this group of OU basketball fans up against those of any board I have ever been on as the most dedicated, most knowledgeable and best behaved fans anywhere. Sure, we have an occasional troll or malcontent visitor who is here more to stir the pot than participate in a legitimate discussion. But, on the whole, our members do a remarkable job of controlling their emotions and their criticism of coaches and players. I don’t have a problem with that as long as it’s not personal.

When it comes to defense, I’d dare say few here would would give our coaching staff a “job well done.” That duty usually falls on the assistants. Even I have been critical of them lately, because I have some serious questions about player development, defense and recruiting, all in the assistant coaches job description.

Nothing wrong with criticism if it’s offered as a sincere concern and done tastefully. Fan boards like this would be a dull place if opinions were not allowed. So, for those of you who might have been upset with the opinions expressed after the TTU loss, I echo what WaymanFan had to say. I’m surprised by the small number of posts the admins have had to edit lately. You deserve a reward for your restraint through these losses. Thank you!

I been on dozens and dozens of boards/forums through the years. I never had much problems with any of them. Seems in the last few years there are some forums that if you take different side or say anything that goes against the grain of a select few trouble begins. I say what I feel to be the truth always have always will. Will I miss the forum? Sure there are some good folks on here. Things change, this site has to cost pretty good chuck of change to keep running. I don't blame the owner/owners at all to step out. I sure wouldn't want the hassle to try and maintain it.

I think the thread is a little melodramatic. I am a member at a board for all the teams I root for and this one is very tame in terms of posts/members that should be censored. As a matter of fact, I have seen VERY little of anything over the years here that I would term over the line.

I am not a particularly sensitive person on these matters so nothing really gets under my skin personally... but trying to be objective I also don't see much of anything that crosses the line or drags the board down to a level where someone wouldn't want to visit.

You will always have some folks that lean negative no matter what and almost seem to take pleasure when they are "right" and the team struggles. Might be some "told ya so" posts that are annoying and/or unnecessary. But for the most part, I think the members that lean negative either do it out of legitimacy and raise good points or it's just sort of their shtick and it doesn't hurt anyone.

I think because this is a college forum there is a sensitivity on criticizing individual players. In all seriousness, how do you convey that you think Lattin has been a major disappointment without being accused of "hating" on him? How do you express that you don't think Ty Lazenby should be on the floor at a Power 5 school without being considered to be "trashing" a kid? In other words how do you say "politely" that you think a guy stinks? If the answer is if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it... well, then the whole concept of a message board is kind of out the door.

I like this board and appreciate those that moderate and maintain it. I'll be sorry to see it go. I think it is generally a very well reasoned place to talk OU hoops.
