OWASSO — Fourth-ranked Sapulpa escaped Owasso’s Senior Night with a 52-51 victory Friday behind Brice Calip’s milestone performance and Chelsea Dungee’s disregard for the No. 9 Rams’ defense.
Dungee, a future Oklahoma Sooner, had 21 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block.
“My shots weren’t falling, so I needed something that was more productive, I had to move in for closer range and take shots they couldn’t defend,” Dungee said.
She drew Owasso’s defense in tightly, which opened space for Calip a few feet out.
Calip’s milestone came early. She scored on a runner in the first quarter to record her 1,300th career point. A prolific player in the running for the All-Metro Ms. Outside, Calip also has more than 700 rebounds, 300 steals and 300 assists at Sapulpa.
She finished with 12 Friday.
Bound for Missouri State University, Calip put a cap on a special season for her coach, mother Darlean Calip.
“It’s gone by so fast, I’ve really enjoyed it,” Darlean Calip said. “This senior class has been special, not just because Brice is playing, but I’ve had these girls all four years now, for the most part,”
The game began with an Owasso starting lineup indicative of senior night. Rachel Skalnik, Jordan Kunka, Michaela O’Connell, Ashlyn Koelsch and Sara Goins.
It wasn’t for show, though.
Owasso held a 17-10 lead thanks to Taylor Smith’s 3-pointer from the right side at the first-quarter buzzer.
It wasn’t until the Rams (17-6, 8-6) transitioned into their regular lineup that the shooting went cold on their side of the court.
“It was a little rough with some of us going back in there and not hitting shots,” Leiloni Culley said. “We had a tough time holding on.”
Sapulpa’s (19-3, 12-3) first lead was 26-24, coming from Whitney Kamies’ offensive rebound and putback with 1:30 left in the third quarter.
From there, Dungee and Calip extended it to a 10-point lead.
A zone defense kept Terryn Milton and Mya Bhinhar from getting near the basket for high-percentage shots and forced Owasso to continue shooting from the perimeter.
After making the first seven 3-pointers in the first half, Owasso’s well ran dry.
Bhinhar missed a deep 3 in the final minute, O’Connell made one final shot, but it would not be enough.
