Scrimmage Saturday

This hurts. Not because it really matters -- it's a scrimmage, after all -- but it will serve to dampen enthusiasm about the team among the casual fans, which will likely impact early-season attendance. Shooting that poorly from deep and horrendously from the free throw line -- ugh.

Can we petition to get those Aussie teams to join the Big 12?

James- 28 pts
Young- 18 pts, 9 ast
Manek- 13 pts, 9 reb

bad turnovers and free throw shooting, oi. mcgusty didn’t play well, and was subbed out promptly after a bad shot early in the second. james came in and the offense went on a nice run to tie it at 61. james looks really comfortable. trae tried to force some things late with a little success. obviously defense needs to get better, but uta was on fire after those four straight missed free throws at 68-63.

good team. good luck to them and a speedy recovery for the kid with the serious knee injury.

I was very excited that basketball was having a scrimmage during the one weekend I was in town and I was there. Here are some stray observations:

- we did the "platoon" substitution method for most of the game until the final few minutes. If we would've substituted normally, this game would've been different. At least that's what I keep telling myself. The second group (Shepard, James, Lazenby, Freeman, Jamuni) reaaaaaally struggled to score, except for James. When the second group first came in during the first half, that's when UTA really took over. They scored at will and if memory serves James only scored 5 points then and no one else scored. We had a scoring drought that dragged on forever. But the good news is that those 5 will probably never be on the court together during the season.

- Polla is our 11th man (12th with Doolittle) and didn't enter the game until about 2 minutes left.

- Trae had some good moments and he's VERY fast, but overall it wasn't a great game for him. I'm sure a lot of it was jitters -- he had several thoughtless turnovers and didn't shoot well. He's better than he showed today and he'll be fine.

- free throw shooting was abysmal. Not sure the stats but it felt like we shot 30%

- UT Arlington shot the ball with confidence and played inspired. They'll be a tournament team. They had a lot of incredible, perfectly timed passes. They've clearly played together a long time.

- James' stroke does appear to be back. Hopefully it stays!

- We rebounded well, particularly on the offensive end.

- UTA had a lotttttt of open threes and hit them. They hit contested threes too. We shot very poorly.

I'm still convinced we're better than we showed today but today was not promising.

Radio broadcast speculated Polla will redshirt.

The color guy did, yeah, but his reasoning didn't really add up. He cited the fact that Polla hadn't played in today's game as evidence that he was a redshirt candidate, and then, in short order, Polla entered the game. And even if Polla is definitely redshirt-bound, that wouldn't be a reason to keep him out of today's game. Redshirts have played in exhibition games in previous seasons (and Polla saw plenty of action in the games Down Under).

This was just the type of scrimmage that coaches like. There is no benefit to scrimmaging lousy teams.

After reading the comments on this thread, disappointing would be an understatement. I'm holding out hope that it was just a bad game against a quality team and not a forecast of things to come.:(

I understand your point...but UTA won 27 games last year and has everyone back.

They may be a bit unknown but are a good team.

Having said that....OU has a ton of work to do.

Yes, I believe Lon will use this to his advantage for sure. In fact, he may be secretly glad it turned out like it did.

oh yeah. you're certainly right there. this is an excellent motivational chance to make them bear down on defense even more.
