How long does he get? They are staring 20 losses in the face, and we know Texas boosters aren't known for their patience. In fairness to him, the team is basically all freshmen and sophomores.

It's only his 2nd year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were better than expected last year...and he has a lot of you and talented players! To even hint at them getting rid of him already is ridiculous!

Man, they are a mess!

I was scared that was a home run hire but doesn't look good yet.

He will get till the end of next year. If they are good in 2017-2018, he will be fine.

Who knows, Shaka and his bovines may be able to get a win over our Sooners this season. But give Kruger another year teaching this year's group and Smart may be long gone before the horns win another game against OU.

But they have so much "talent".

What they have is a bunch of athletes who aren't very good basketball players.

If the "experts" were right in their preseason predictions, UT fans cannot possibly be happy with Smart's performance so far this season. The loss to Kent State in Austin almost certainly has Longhorn fans everywhere scratching their collective heads and wondering if they made a mistake in what was believed to be an exciting hire two years ago.

He'll get at least one more year to right the ship.

I thought when they hired him that he would have texas as only of the few teams that can give kansas a run each year. He still may if he doesn't get the boot.

And (IMHO)…an overrated coach.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Smart never even won an Atlantic 10 regular season championship....although he did win the conference tournament twice at VCU. However, he has parlayed his "one magical run" in the NCAA tournament (Final Four in 2011) into the discussion of being one of the best young coaches in the country. Other than that, he never won more than one game in the NCAAs (twice) and lost in the first round three other times.

Needless to say, I've never been that sold on him primarily because he came from an overrated mid-major league and I always thought his "havoc style" was a gimmick. He has been the beneficiary of getting somewhat of a gaudy record (because of the A-10) and making the tournament every year.....that's about it.

Is he a good coach?....yes, but nothing special.

Thanks, stormspencer. You said exactly what I was thinking – and you did it quite eloquently.

wait...are we talking about capel?

Couldn't this exact same statement be made about OU currently?

It's why I hate recruiting athletes that aren't players. OU shouldn't have to recruit guys that "started playing basketball 3 years ago." That is ridiculous.

I still always liked the Kelvin Sampson recruiting strategy... He always said you needed 3 well rounded players, then you need guys to fill roles.

You needed some well-rounded players
Ryan Minor, Hollis Price, Eduardo Najera, Ace Mcghee, Taj Gray, etc

You needed some 3pt gunners
(Kelley Newton, Tim Heskett, Eric Martin, Mike Neal, etc)

You needed some slashers
Terrell Everett, Nolan Johnson, Jason Detrick, Ebi Ere etc)

You needed some rebounders
Evan Wiley, Kevin Bookout, Renzi Stone, etc)

You needed some "heart/hustle/hardwood" kinda guys
Johnny Gilbert, Daryan Selvy, Quannas White, David Godbold, etc)

There are a few different ways to do this... one way is to recruit guys to your system, and the other way is to take the best players available and then tailor your strategy around the talent you have.

I like having an identity... I could watch a Tom Izzo team for 10 years and know it was Tom Izzo coaching them, because you can tell by the style. Sampson had a style. Mike Anderson, Bob Huggins, etc have recognizable styles.

One of the criticisms of Travis Ford was that he had no style... nobody knew what they were even trying to do out there. Lon has won enough games that he clearly knows what he is doing, but I don't think he is a "system" guy.

Be interested to hear all of your thoughts/opinions on this.

He did a great job with a mediocre team last season. I've got no idea what the team's problems are this year -- though it's obvious they have many -- but I'd bet he'll get them figured out. UT will be a force in the conference next year, if not a tough team to beat this year.

Shaka is really good, he'll figure it out just like Kruger.

I've watched Texas play about 4-5 games this year. They have numerous problems (like us), but their biggest issue is that they have absolutely no PG on the roster.....not even a serviceable one. They are one of the worst 3-pt shooting teams in the country (#331) and, from a defensive standpoint, they give up a very high % of offensive rebounds.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I've never been that impressed with Shaka. He had a veteran team last year and they were ok.....but that's about it. He has his work cut out for him this year.
