Sherri paying Colton $85K

Sherri is paying Colton $85,000 annually. At least he makes less than Pam Decosta and Chad Thrailkill.

From OU employment records:


Coale, Colton D., title changed from Women’s Basketball Player Personnel Specialist [University Program Specialist I] to Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach [Coach/Sports Professional IV], Athletics Department, salary changed from annualized rate of $48,000 for 12 months to annualized rate of $85,000 for 12 months, July 1, 2018. Managerial Staff.



To show you the distortion of salaries for athletic coaches because of the law of supply and demand. Here is another professor hired at the same time.

Bennett, Lea Diann, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, annualized rate of $85,000 for 12 months, September 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Tenurable base $50,000. Department salary $35,000. New tenure track appointment
 
If they ever win another game, Colton will probably be promoted to associate head coach and/or Head Coach in Waiting.
 
She should be paying him out of her salary instead of gouging the University so the baby boy can have a job.
 
This is a damn joke! How is he even worth half that much?!! none of these coaches are worth their salaries, not even half of them!

How in the world can Joe C justify paying $85K to someone without any coaching experience? The new president wants budget cuts start with Sherri and her over paid mommy's boy.
 
Food for thought and a possible theory as to why the WBB seems to be operated so much differently and less strategic than other OU sports programs or any other WBB program (including the local park and recreation center) in the world.

The Director of Operations for WBB is Guy Austin. His family members are major contributors to OU and one a former Regent. Maybe the money will stop flowing if SC and CC are out. And Mr. Austin has been there 12 years? He has a sales/marketing background, but he clearly has some challenges trying to get butts in the seats...if that's part of his duties.

Well, no need to wonder what he does. Per the website:

"Austin manages the team's finances, plans official visits for potential student-athletes and coordinate the summer basketball camps. He also oversees the OU Fast Break Club, Guest Coach, Coaches' Clinic and Sooner Big Sis programs, in addition to assisting in the numerous marketing aspects for the Sherri Coale-led team."

What camp? What on earth is really going on? Maybe he can add to his busy schedule and update the website...or better yet, coordinate a summer basketball camp!

Guy Austin is related to Jimmie Austin....of OU golf fame.
 
Usually doesn't work that way in a large organization.

1) Could be that an Assistant Coach and Assistant Professor have the same job grade. If so $85,000 could be the minimum salary for that grade.

2) Heads of organizations usually don't have the authority to unilaterally set the salary of subordinates. Her supervisor (Joe C) and the Human Resource people both usually have to approve.

However Sherri apparently pushed for Colton. Doubtful that Joe C went to her and said "Colton has such potential as a basketball coach, lets put him in the job."

However it happened, it sat up Sherri and Colton for a huge load of criticism. They didn't need that with the kind of year the team is having. I'm sure she had enough connections to get him a high school job or a step up from his OU gig at another school.

I doubt that anyone here really knows how and why Colton was selected and how much he was paid. Certainly Sherri had to have infleunce with the decision. But it could be just another example of the "Twitter Mob" deciding someone is guilty without knowing all the facts. A national commentator has declared the "Twitter Mob" as a danger to our freedom. The media runs with the tweet and as a result someone is declared guilty by public opinion and deprived of due process.

You are correct that we do not know the inside of how and why Colton was selected. But the link I posted is public records from the Board of Regents meeting in which Colton's title and salary were approved. Colton's salary is $85K. But it is possible that he has some bonus structure that will pay him more. No written details were provided to the Board of Regents for approval per the documents.

Someone told me that Jan Ross took a pay cut? Have no idea if that is true or not, but pretty sure she is not on the road recruiting anymore.

I was encouraged when she brought Pam Decosta back in. From everything I read, Stacy Hansmeyer was what brought the Paris twins to OU? Not sure why she left. I know the recruiting road is brutal and many longtime women's coaches have retired for that reason alone.

Just not sure why she hasn't gone after ex players, grad assistants in other successful programs? A blurb from a 2014 article, so Sherri is under contract until 2021?

Once Jan was reclassified as not being an assistant women's basketball coach and was replaced by Colton she was prohibited by the NCAA from recruiting off campus. I am not certain what she is allowed to do from a recruiting perspective in her new job as the Chief of Staff but I would suspect there is some restriction.

When prospective players are on campus any member of the Staff can visit with them.
 
Regarding Colton, the point is we don't know why he is paid 85,000. So many are expressing public speculations without knowing the facts. That kind of speculation can be damaging to people.

Don't get me wrong, I am against nepotism. People should not put themselves in a position to fire someone who doesn't perform who is close personally. It is a big risk to take. No one will view you actions fairly.

Also I hate politics. In my lifetime I have seen far too many people gain something they didn't deserve simply because of politics. It is a reward to suckups who don't perform and is usually damaging to the organization. If Colton is not up to the task it has been damaging to the OU team. And again, I don't know if he can do the job well or not.

Joe C. needs to yank Sherri’s dog collar, remind her who is running the show, and kick her ass upstairs to some promotion so a new coach and staff can restore this program to the heights that Sherri once was WILLING to strive for and achieve.

There’s no reason to let this program suffer an additional year.

Joe needs to grow a pair of effing balls.
