Shout Out For Soonernorm

There is quite a difference in Bob Stoops and Sherri Coale, something that has not been acknowledged by a number who wish to be critical of Sherri. Bob Stoops came into a program that had won six national titles in 48 years, among the best in the history of college football, certainly among the best post-war programs. He came into a program that had established itself as a strong recruiting stronghold that had operated effectively in the hotbeds of Texas, Louisiana, Southern California, and Florida, and OU controlled nearly all of the top recruits from Oklahoma. Prior to Stoops arrival, Switzer had won three national titles and twelve conference titles in sixteen years. Wilkinson had won three national titles and fourteen conference titles in seventeen years. Stoops has won one national title and eight conference titles in sixteen years. He has the same number of years as Switzer and one fewer than Wilkinson. He has fifteen more losses than either of them, about one per year. Wilkinson had built the program, elevating it from the status of a school that could go 10-0 in 1938 without much consideration for a national title to one that was always in consideration for a national title. He and George Lynn Cross had built the program, and he is a more fitting comparison for Sherri. Stoops is operating on their shoulders, the tradition that they built.

The University of Oklahoma's women's program had one exactly one conference title in twenty-two years of existence. It had finished in the top twenty one time (1986) when it won its conference title. It had been to the NCAA tournament twice, losing in the first round once and winning in the first round once, at the time a Sweet Sixteen finish. We were so enthusiastic about women's basketball that we had cancelled the program in 1990. This was not exactly a strong foundation from which to build.

This is Sherri's nineteenth year. In that time, we have been the conference champions six times, rather than one. We have been to the NCAA tournament in fifteen straight years (threatened this year), the Sweet Sixteen nine times, the Final Four three times.

From one conference title to six.
From two NCAA appearances to fifteen.
From one Sweet Sixteen appearance to nine.
From zero Final Four appearances to three.

Bob is not a step above what we had as a tradition. Sherri IS OU's tradition.

If we were to replace Bob, I think we could find someone who would want to carry out the tradition of working to win a national title. If we were to replace Sherri, I don't know if this program would make it back to the Sweet Sixteen.

Sherri Coale is making around 1,000,000 dollars per year. She deserves to be criticized for a poor performance in any facet of her program just like Bob or Lon does....

I'm certain she would agree with me.

She would agree with you. But, you should exhibit better judgement.

Some on here take exception to any criticism of Coale. I do not like to see the players criticized, but if a coach is not producing, they shoulkd be fair game. Especially at $1,ooo,ooo+ per year for a program that loses millions each year.

I agree with just about everything Three Toe and MSProud said in their posts. Having said that, I'm also ecstatic to see Norm back onboard. He's a loyal OU fan, and he wants the best for the women's program. I also consider him a message board friend, even if I often disagree with him.

Thanks Scrybe! While we might not always agree, I always respect your opinion and am very glad you are a major part of this board!

That is an often-stated defense, but is it really accurate? Is any criticism of Sherri met with consternation? Or, is it perhaps a rather constant drumbeat of remarks that appear more founded in sexism than in reality?

I don't think anyone has failed to notice that we are not in the Final Four. Yet, if you have any perspective at all, you have to do more than say that everything is Sherri's fault. I have made it quite clear that Sherri has built a program from almost nothing. The failure to recognize this is unacceptable.

I have also pointed out that we have probably the best series of recruits coming in over the next couple of years that we have had since 2006. Yet, I have not seen any celebration of this at all. We have two members of the U-16 team of 2013 coming to OU next year. Texas has zero. Baylor has one. We already have one member of the U-16 All-Tournament team at OU. Texas has zero. Baylor has zero. We have a top six recruit for 2017, probably two of the top twenty. Where is the celebration?

When I see only complaints with no celebration of what has happened that is so exceptional and what is coming that is just as exceptional, I think it is time to ask those who criticize Sherri why. Show some perspective. Or, show me one person who could come to OU and elevate the program.

I don't think Geno would have tried.

Sherri Coale is a great success story. A small town Oklahoma girl becomes head coach at the flagship university in her home state and is highly successful. But, as Stoops will say also, coaching at a big time environment like OU is a "What have you done lately?" matter. Big bucks bring big expectations and big pressure. The program has gone down the last 4 or 5 years. Lets talk about the future players when they sign their LOI. These you are talking about may never play for the Sooners.

Great post! We all give Sherri credit for what she's done but, is she on track to equal or improve on final four appearances? That is now the benchmark at OU. A lot of coaches get in trouble for not being able to advance the program from the benchmark that has been established. Not unlike CEOs who take a company to new heights but is unable to maintain that level.

Before Stoops, three was what?
Before Sherri, there was what?
Is there a difference?
What do you think will happen after Stoops? After Sherri?
