Softball

It's always nice to see some favoritism on the part of the NCAA site. In the story about the top ten plays of the College World Series, Auburn gets some nice billing.

#10 Michigan SS Harris diving catch of line drive
#9 Florida State CF Claveman catches ball against the wall
#8 Oklahoma 2B Clifton drops down squeeze play bunt to score Arnold
#7 UCLA 2B Perez makes diving catch of short line drive
#6 UCLA Satarak's grand slam
#5 Auburn SS Cooper makes bare-handed grab and throws to first for an out.
#4 Oklahoma Knighten's three run shot over Alabama
#3 Auburn CF Draper makes a good catch against Florida State
#2 Auburn LF Howard catches Knighten's home run bid
#1 Auburn 2B Carosone's grand slam

Auburn had four of the top five plays in the CWS?

I am extremely excited to see what this program does over the next few years. We have the potential to go on an amazing run. What a job Patty does on and off the field. She deserves a huge pay raise.

It is doubtful that Patty gets a huge raise. But will definitely get a kick up in pay. Patty is presently paid $350,000/year. Clint Myers was hired away for ASU where he had won two WCWS and made 7 WCWS in eight years. He has made two WCWS in his three years at Auburn. His salary is $180,000. I expect he will get a big bump in pay this year. Alabama's coach Patrick Murphy was raised to $240,000 in 2012 but nothing has been noted that he has gotten another raise.

Beth Torina was hired in 2011 at $110,000 and has probably got a raise since. Tim Walton was making $250,000 in 2012 but won the WCWS for Florida in 2014 and 2015 so I suspect he is making over $300,000. Mike White, Oregon signed a 6 year deal in 2015 for $1.4 million or $233,333 per year.

It seems to me that presently Patty is definitely one of the two top paid softball coaches in the country (Gasso & Walton) and probably the top paid.

This article is from a couple of weeks ago (before Fla/Ga super-regional) and states Walton makes $305K so Patty is significantly ahead of him.

I suspect Patty will get bumped to $375-400K after all is said and done. Maybe closer to $375 with bigger bonuses for winning it all. Melyssa will get a good raise too.

If Patty is the highest paid coach in college softball, all is right with the world. The best coach in softball should be the highest paid.

I think Patty and Melissa are close so I dont suppose she would take another job but, to be sure, she ought to get a substantial raise. If she did it would have to be a head coach's job.

It is interesting to note that K.J. Kindler ($330,500) with her one national championship at the time, now two, was making 10.7% more than Mark Williams ($298,499) was making with his six national championships, now seven. This is probably a result of Williams being promoted as an assistant and OU having to buy K.J. away form her alma mater ISU. Also on a national scale women's gymnastics is bigger than men's gymnastics.

Without knowing what the market for gymnastics coaches is it will be difficult to know what kind of money Williams and Kindler will get with their new contracts after winning another national championship. Perhaps only token raises of less than 15%.

Also Patty is making $90K+ more than baseball coach Pete Hughes and rightfully so. Can't say the Boren and Castiglione are showing any real gender preference in what they pay their coaches. Seems to be based or revenue, market value and success.

In the six games of the College World Series, OU had 24 runs batted in. Eighteen (75%) were by freshmen!!

I think this is probably the reason more than anything that KJ is paid more than Mark. I'm sure Mark is the top paid men's coach, and probably not even close. I'd almost be KJ is top paid women's coach (if not, soon will be). I really doubt that how they came to be coaches at OU had much to do with it.

I would respectively disagree. I think it is a combination of both and the biggest factor is probably women's vs men's salary scale but no way to know for certain. But Mark Williams was hired at low salary when he became the head coach at OU. Assistants always start out being paid much less than established coaches. The starting salary differential is seldom made up. They are then given raises on performance.

Not so in K.J.'s case OU had to pay top dollar to get her to leave a top women's gymnastics program that had just made the gymnastics final six, an opportunity to win the national championship. It could easily be argued that ISU was a better WGP than was OU back in 2006. For comparison the Alabama gymnastics coach signed a five year contract for $170,000. That is a ton less than K.J.'s salary. Bama has won 6 NC's.

Joe C. had to provide facilities upgrades and a big salary boost to get her to come. That is on record. K.J. goal was to win the national championship and ISU was less than an ideal venue. I cannot confirm it but feel certain at least the 10.7% salary differential existed the moment that Joe C. hired K.J. Also Mark won 3 of his NC prior to K.J. becoming a Sooner. Since 2006 the count is Mark 4 K.J. 2.

Might draw an analogy of a football player coming out early for the draft. The argument to stay is always stay and you will sign for much bigger bucks where as coming out now gets you a smaller starting salary. However if the performance is the same of the same 5-10 career the player who played his senior will generally always make more, often much more money, for his career because of his starting salary base point.

That one is pure and simple competition. There are only 21 men's gymnastics teams in the country and they don't draw much attendance. There are 82 on the women's side and some in the SEC have average attendance of above 10K. Yes, OU had to buy K. J. Kindler away from ISU.

And Mark Williams salary level is in part because he started with a lower salary being promoted as an assistant rather than having been hired from another school as a head coach. Seldom is that differential ever overcome.

Listened to a Kenny Mossman interview with James Hale today. He stated improvesmentsto Marita Hynes was on their agenda but funding was presently the issue do to the Oklahoma economy decline. Did say they were seeking a donor or two to fund planned improvements to MHF but did not have one at this time. He could not put a timetable on when improvements might be made.

Just curious, not judging anything, how were/are the improvements being made to te football stadium?

Thanks for the link. What I was wondering was who was paying for it? I am guessing that there are probably suites that have already been bought or leased for so many years, but was it all basically private funding? If that info was in the link, I missed.

Yes, it's all donations and people or corporations buying suites.
