SU’s Honoré knows what's expected

Leaving home for the first time was tough. Playing against better competition was tough.
But for Southern forward Barry Honoré, the toughest introduction to college basketball might have been the early-morning sprints.
“Conditioning,” said Honoré, now a 6-foot-7, 230-pound sophomore.
“Conditioning was something I had never done. That was the hardest transition to make from high school. We were getting up at 5, going to the track, running at 5:30, then lifting weights before classes. Where I came from, I was just used to practice.”
If Honoré had a tough time adjusting to the college game, he seemed hide it well.
Sure, the Jaguars might have staggered to a fifth-place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. But by the end of the season, Honoré had turned into a force around the goal, averaging 8.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game — good enough to become the SWAC freshman of the year.
Now comes the really fun part: getting even better than he was before.
“When you’re competing against opponents in the league who are more experienced, they know what to expect,” fourth-year coach Rob Spivery said.
“I think Barry, coming in, did not know what to expect last year. I think toward the end of the year, he caught on to it. He exerted himself a little bit more, was more aggressive. If he can be that way from the very beginning this year, then it’s just going to help him a lot. And it’s certainly going to help us as a team.”
As a high school senior from South Garland, just outside Dallas, Honoré originally committed to Oral Roberts. But when the scholarship offer fell through, his father, Bruce, got in touch with the Jaguars’ coaching staff.
Bruce Honoré had grown up near New Roads, and most of his family members still lived nearby.
Spivery, for his part, liked what he saw from Honoré in high school: a long, beefy, athletic kid who worked hard in practice and largely kept his mouth shut.
Last season, he often settled for short jumpers instead of driving to the goal. He was also slow to move his feet and rotate on defense. But more importantly, Spivery said, Honoré has to become more aggressive — to exert his will on opponents, rather than reacting to their moves.

Here is a take from a source that follows Texas area recruiting:
He has good size. He is a decent shooter. He won't be a star at Oklahoma, but he can be a solid player off of the bench
Texashoops.com recruiting staff on Barry:
Barry is a strong bodied swing man who can control the boards and move people off the block defensively. He has a soft touch around the goal and can step out and hit the three. He finishes well against bigger players and knows how to create space with his body.
