We are only about 48 hours from tip-off of the 2016-2017 season:

12:30 Fox Sports OK Sunday

Southern Illinois was #140 last year, 20-13, and went to the NIT. They are coached by Cindy Stein who we faced for twelve years at Missouri. She has built SIU from a 5-20 type team to a twenty win team in four years.

They lost their ace rebounder (11.18 per game) and their #2 and #3 scorers. They return their top scorer who is also their top three-point shooter and assist maker in Rishonda Napier, a 5-5 senior.

Likely starters:

6-1 F Kim Nebo, Sr., Cypress Lakes, Tx
6-1 G Kylie Giebelhausen, Jr, East Peoria, IL
5-10 G/F Tiajaney Hawkins, Fr, East Chicago Central, IN
5-5 PG Rishonda Napier, Sr, Bellarmine-Jefferson, Burbank, CA
5-11 G/F Carlie Corrigan, Sr, Plainfield North, IL

Giebelhausen also shoots about 34% from three. Nebo is being counted on for rebounding since she was #2 (about 5.3/game). But, she was also a 42% free throw shooter. They really need for Hawkins to step up as a freshman.

They walloped a couple of exhibition opponents. But, I wonder if they will be up to matching #140 this year?

There seems to be a lot of 1v1 offense from the Sooners.

And there is a significant dropoff once VPL goes out defensively and offensively.

Best half of basketball I've seen out of Gioya. She did everything: 12 points, 6 rebounds, two assists, and zero turnovers.

T'Ona---point guards should be able to hit free throws.

Vivi--ten points, 4 rebounds
Gabbi--six points, 5 rebounds

They had 14 offensive rebounds!

80-48

Gioya was Player-of-the-Game, best all-around game she has ever had. Sixteen points, eight rebounds, two assists, and zero turnovers. She was aggressive, and she made the right decisions today.

Vivi led with eighteen points off of six of eight shooting, six of six from the line, and six boards. She was pretty dominant. Gabbi, Maddie, and Peyton played well, but none shot well. They had six, four, and four.

Edwards had seven, and Dungee had six. I was happy with Odimgbe who was effective with four points, two rebounds, and a blocked shot in five minutes. She looked good. Mulkey had three blocks in the fourth quarter, defining the lane area as hers. She did score on a layup. Ijeoma missed two free throws for her only bad thing.

Penzo had a nice line: two points, four rebounds, three assists, and a block in twelve minutes. McKenna had six boards!

Everyone did well. It was an aggressive offense and defense. We broke it open with a 23-2 third quarter, making it 61-34 after three. We hit ONE three, by Derica, with about five minutes left.

I agree! Biggest negative was shooting. SIU is a pretty good mid major.

I expect us to be better than last year. ViVi is more consistent around the hoop than KayKay was. Carter looks quicker than ever and she really had a good all-around game tonight. Gabbi much improved and the offense really moves when she is in the game. Has also improved her offensive skills and is moving her feet well on defense.

Maddie and Little need to add more scoring to what is otherwise a solid game. Mulkey has a ton of potential and it will take some time to develop it but she is going to be fun to watch.

Dungee can really get to the hoop. Seems to have a natural change of pace that leaves them grasping at air. Wait until Llanusa joins her. We will have some serious running game.

On the less positive side we gave up 16 offensive rebounds. That will kill us against Baylor, Texas and West Virginia. We did block out better tonight but there are still too many instances where we just go to a rebounding position with no idea where the offensive rebounders are. Results in a players running past them to grab a board for an easy putbask and a lot of 50-50 balls that we lose.

Outside shooting. 1-16 enough said.

Only one bad stretch. The starters built a 13-4 lead and we were trailing when Sherri began to put them back in. To me it was a matter of personnel. Treece did a nice job rebounding but she has no inside game and we became a perimeter team when she replaced ViVi. We were much better in the second half when EJ replaced ViVi. I thought EJ looked like a player. Both Edwards and Williams are good defensively but are basically one on one players. TiTi does not get the offense going as well as Gabbi or even Carter, Maddy and Penzo. She does work very hard and is very quick, gets more rebounds than someone her size should get but she has to do more than penetrate on offense and occasionally kick off for a good play to run a good offense. Wyatt was not hitting so she didn't contribute anything to get out of the funk. We were outscored 17-6.

Our starters were good the whole game, except for 3 point shooting. None of the reserves made you think they should replace a starter-mostly some good and some bad from each reserve. Derrica a much better defensive player this year, but until she made a 3 late, we were ZERO of 15. EJ, Penzo, Dungee, Mulkey, and Titi all had some good moments but still great drives to the basket and only shoot 3 of 7.
3rd Quarter, the starters looked like a team, with switching types of defense setting up fast break and/or transition baskets. I think the pressure of different defenses, (Press, Trap, Zone, and in your face man to man) in the second half really kept everybody energized and playing much better on both ends.

The good thing about shooting 1-16 yesterday behind the arc was, they really didn't get down on themselves when that happened. That has happened in the past. I thought the energy displayed by all players that played was very encouraging. They played hard the whole game regardless of score or situation.

A serious poster would probably wait a little longer before jumping in with such a negative post.

Usually, missing threes does cause us some gloom and doom. But, they were all about getting to the rim. Last year, we might have shot thirty trying to make a three. This year, we worked it inside instead.

Yeah, we had a hard time finishing at the rim in the first half (no problem getting there). If we finish 75 percent of those plays, we're up by 20-25 at the half.

The girls really turned it around in the second half. It's nice to be able to win by 30 when you hit just one trey the entire game.

In the post game press conference, Sherri basically guaranteed we would shoot 40% on threes. Hopefully she knows something we don't know. If we consistently shoot 3's that well we will be very hard to beat.

Through two exhibitions and one game none of the starters are shooting BTA very well. Hope they improve but history has me concerned that the 40% number is well above reach. I would be tickled if they shot 36.5% which would be a 5% jump over last year. It might be worth noting that only 4 teams shot 40% BTA in 2015-16. They were 42.1%, Notre Dame 41.2%, Army 41.0% and Maryland 40.2%

Player,---shots,----%----2015%
Little-----2-9-----22.2-----31.9
Ortiz-----3-11----27.3-----31.3
Manning-2-8-----25.0------30.4
Carter---1-8-----12.5------27.1

Reserves are shooting better.

Wyatt----6-16----37.5-----39.1
Treece---1-2-----50.0-----27.8
Dungee--2-4-----50.0-----N.A.

I stand by what I said. The post depth is not a strong suit. And there was a lot of 1v1 the entire game. 9 assists vs 13 turnovers. Carter and Dungee appear to be able to create their own shots at this point. Everyone else seemed to struggle. The motion is still there for Oklahoma's offense, but the ball movement isn't.

Oklahoma will be fine as they have the playmakers needed to finish top 4 in the conference and easily get in the NCAAs.

Maddie is 2-6 (1-1, 1-2, 0-3)
I doubt that we shoot over 33-34% early in the season. I think once we settle in, we will realize that Gioya, Gabbi, Maddie, Derica, Dungee, and Peyton are the only chances we have at threes---for now. They were each a bit out of form in the first game as we came out in a frenzy. I didn't see more than one good form in all of the misses. It will be a part of the offense. I did notice that Sherri said that Rich is our best shooter.

Last year was a bit strange.

2016----2015----2014-----overall
31.9%---34.4%------------33.1% Peyton
27.1%---40.0%--20.0%----31.4% Gioya
31.3%---33.3%------------32,4% Gabbi
39.1%---31.7%--33.3%----35.9% Derica
30.4%---41.4%--100%-----33.1% Maddie (the 1-1 was in 2012)

Of all of our shooters, everyone was down last year, except Derica. A year like 2015 would be acceptable.

1 of 16 against a team like SIU doesn't support a team averaging 33% for the year. And the 1 was the very last one taken.

Refs were whistle happy, but we're still making silly fouls.

We need Nancy to be more assertive on offense.

Rebounding needs to improve. As last year, they don't box out.
