Spangler and Bookout

Why do you feel the need to point that out to me?

I thought I was simply answering your question by explaining my comment about Gotlieb. I completely agree that Grooms shooting better would really help the team.

Back to the Spangler comparisons, I've seen too little of his play to judge, but overall he probably isn't as athletic as Taylor Griffin and probably isn't as polished as Ryan Minor was offensively as an upperclassman. That said, it seems like Gonzaga fans are pretty upset about losing him so they must have thought that he had some solid potential.

The name that I'm surprised didn't get mentioned more in this thread is Eduardo Najera. Now I'm not going to throw out that Spangler is good enough to have a 10 plus year NBA career, but from what people who have seen Spangler play more than me leads me to think that they are similar players beyond just measurables [both around 6'8" and 230].

The thing I don't like about the Minor and Eduardo comparisons are the 3 point shooting. Everything I've read about Spangler (excluding this board), don't mention that as an option at all. And he didn't take a single shot from out there this season.

Ryan Minor made 9 of 21 threes his frosh year. 30 of 78 as a soph, 69 of 176 as a JR, and 62 of 191 as a senior.

Eduardo made 3 of 15 his frosh year, 13 of 49, 51 of 149, and 18 of 82 (don't remember him shooting so poorly his SR year).

I really don't see Spangler ever taking that many 3's. By all accounts he has less of an outside game than Osby, and he took what, 10 this year?

I agree with all of this, particularly the bold portion. I really went back and took a look at Eduardo before I threw out the potential comparison because: (a) he was a guy that wasn't highly ranked [although I guess he was more highly recruited than what many thought]; (b) he played and scored sparingly as a freshman on an NCAA Tournament team; and (c) he was a guy that played tough every minute he was on the floor.

An exact comparison is going to be hard to find, but if people who have seen him play more than me say he is similar athletically to Taylor Griffin [which I doubt, but that is only because Taylor is an incredible athlete] and has a constant motor, then height, weight and background had me thinking of Eduardo...again not expecting him to be as good as Eduardo at all given that Eduardo has had a decade plus run in the NBA, but maybe comparable.

If Spangler plays as hard as Najerra or Minor he is going to be a huge addition to the team. Both of those guys did all of the little things before they became the star players they ultimately were.

My thoughts on Splanger

I remember being a bit puzzled when the Spang wasn't recruited initially. I was still in some mode where i felt J.C. was gonna right the ship and pull out of that nosedive. It is believed by me that he is a good coach but found himself treading a bit of water. I also had to return home after a failure once but I caught my balance.
That being said my first real wtf moment with Capel occurred when we let Spangler get away. I know I joined the party late, but damnit i root for Sooners and he was the coach just off an elite 8 run. Spang was the POY and an OU fan. A quick glance on that Zag board will tell you what they thought of Spangler. I just think its kinda cool he found his way home to Sooner territory during a time when this team needs something.

I would agree he doesn't shoot as much from three as Minor did at OU. I have seen him shoot though and he easily could shoot them. It wasn't his position at Gonzaga to play outside. It hasn't been determined his role in Norman yet.

UNC actually played the third team point guard in the NCAA finals. The backup was hurt very early in the season in addition to the one who transferred prior to the season.
