Stevie Clark

May we never have another player in any sport whose mom or dad becomes a public figure during their son's (or daughter's) time in Norman. That's the last thing I want to see.

There are good and bad ways to be a 'public figure'. Everyone knew who Blake and Taylor's parents were, but they were smart enough not to be a problem.

True.

I mean "public figure" in the sense of doing interviews and interfering with the coach's business.

Like Kendal Thompson's daddy?

You mean Charles Thompson, former Sooner player and current sports talk radio personality, who was paid to talk Sooner football long before his son signed on to play for OU?

Apples and oranges.

Still, in his role as Kendall's dad, he should be careful to what he says. If he's commenting on his son's playing time, interactions with coaches, and the like, he's crossing a line he shouldn't cross.

I wasn't comparing the two situations actually (those being Charles Thompson and Stevie Clark's mom). You listen to Stevie Clark's mother on Traber's show?

I think Bomar's dad was the biggest issue OU has had in my memory. I don't think he changed anything that was happening but he talked a lot. And I suspect his attitude was an influence on how Rhett conducted himself.

Good point. Imagine OU being stuck with Craig James' son (football)? That's a worse-case scenario, but it's best to remove all those unnecessary annoyances.

Statement from Coach Ford regarding Stevie Clark.

“Stevie Clark is not currently with the Cowboys [in Florida] due to personal matters. He continues to be a valued member of the Cowboy Basketball family. The timetable for his return will be evaluated in the near future.”

Didn't Charles Thompson call every radio talk show in Oklahoma after the Baylor game?

Reading between the lines in the release in this morning's Oklahoman, Stevie's offense was serious enough to warrant a suspension with no set timetable for his return. In other words, he has to earn his way back on the team.

Without really knowing what the Stevie did, I applaud Travis Ford for standing firm and sending him home on the next plane. That's the way it should be when a student athlete breaks team rules. All too often, coaches take the soft approach by ignoring or excusing an offense, which only leads to more problems down the road a ways. OU went through two years of that not long ago.

Parents need to shut up when it comes to their child's playing time on a collegiate team.

Believe there is a certain quote from Major Payne about letting a boy grow up.

Sampson wasn't quite a debacle...

Regardless of whether it was a debacle or not, it was a black eye to the program and JC rightfully didn't want to deal with someone like Sampson (or Capel) to be the face of OU basketball.

I want players parents to be involved in their kids lives. I want there to be hell to pay at home if a kid screws up. I also want them to set in if their kids start down the wrong path. I don't however, want a parent that questions the coaches decions. So far Stevie's mom appears to be the first type of parent. I hope it stays that way.

I didn't hear the interview. Did she complain about his playing time?

For the most part parents need to stay out of playing time at all levels.

It was more that she immediately jumped to call into to Traber on the air, without knowing the facts of the situation. It is a concern that someone would handle that situation so publicly, could be a problem in the future. She would have been better served to contact him directly, instead of trying to defend her son on the air like she did. I understand it, but it looks bad. I wouldn't be surprised if his teammates give him some crap about it.

This is not accurate history. OU was upset with Sampson but he was not fired. Furthermore OU was not too upset about the telephone calls, they were upset with the way Sampson dealt with the NCAA.

You would hope that she already knew the facts. I didn't listen to the show but I find it hard to believe that the Mother of the player didn't know why he was sent home.

Ok, I was a little more concerned when people started suggesting she was complaining about playing time. This isn't the way I would have handled the situation, but I really hope she met Stevie at the air port with a switch in her hand.
