The Blessing of Being an OU Fan

Any that didn't expect OU to throw out a couple of stink bombs in Big 12 play were living in a dream world. Bramlage has been a house of horrors for the Kruger led Sooners during his tenure and to be honest I had grim thoughts about the game going in and unfortunately those came to fruition. People need to chill out. Not all is lost.

This.

I will admit I was optimistic about the game at KSU knowing it is a house of horrors for OU. I still hoped we would go and win the game, but we didn't. It happens, and it will happen again but we still have a good team that's fun to watch. Maybe we can make some noise in March but I don't expect us to win the Big 12. Until somebody beats KU, I expect them to win.

I remember what it was like around here 7 and 8 years ago when we were rolling out last place teams (and last year except last year we knew we had good young talent). So, it's hard for me get too upset.

In the end, it's just basketball. My personal life is a mess right now so I tend to not take this stuff too seriously anymore as I am learning to keep it in perspective. If OU losing is the worst thing that happens to me, then I'm doing pretty damn good.

Over the last 25 years, Florida has been the best. Last 50 would be OU.

Well...I disagree. A number of those 25 years Florida has been trash in both basketball and football. They did win NC's in both sports but the bottom has been much lower than OU more times. I would love to win NC's in both sports but would I trade OU's success in both sports for Florida's? I don't think so.

These things tend to shift pretty quickly, so I generally go by one decade at a time. We still have a little time to crown the 2010s decade champ for football & basketball as there are no clear favorites. The 2000s decade belonged to Florida. They won a National Championship in football and two in basketball. OU and tOSU would compete for second place. For the 1990s (obviously not OU's decade in just about any sport), I would probably go with Michigan, though there isn't a really clear winner. The Wolverines won a title in football, and played for two titles in basketball. The 1980s were all Oklahoma. The 1970s had to go to Notre Dame and the 1960s to Ohio State.

Over the past 50 years? Geez, that's just too hard to determine with the torch passing to so many different schools.

A long time ago when I was a child I got disciplined for venting in public. But seriously the internet has changed that. We can all vent anonymously now. The outward appearance is that we have a ton of negative people but if you look at the threads it is usually a few venting over and over again.

I try to look at the whole picture over the longer term. I feel we have a good team with considerable upside but certainly not perfect. I believe Trae Young will probably be the best player in OU history to date. However, we do have some growing to do.

We are not strong in the middle. Lattin and McNease do the job at times but at other time they allow too many points in the paint and too many rebounds and second chances. You can not keep modern players in front of you all of the time and the bigs have to curtail their ability to get to the rim better than we are doing.

Trae has been a sensation but in Big 12 play he has had decision problems. I am confident that he will make improvement there if not major improvement. The K-State game had to be an eye opener for him.

Doolittle is coming along nicely but I feel that he is still adjusting to the offense this season. He and McGusty had to go one on one a lot last year for us to score much and we have a better one on one player this year who is better than either of them. McGusty having the biggest adjustment problem.

Manek will probably become one of OU's best but one who scores 28 points one game and virtually none the next is still a freshman. He has huge upside and hasn't done badly thus far.

Fortunately all of these things are fixable, the hardest being the weakness inside but Doolittle and an improving Manek is going to help those problems. We are probably a top 15 team, maybe top 7 or 8. The question is how much will we improve. The big question for 2018-19 is whether Trae will be back. If he improves his decision making he is gone. If not then we probably get him back. I don't think he will go for 5th pick money or less.

Florida has modern national championships in football and basketball. They make a case for being the best.

OU has way more conference championships and wins than Florida. Florida has losing records against Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Ole Miss. They barely have winning records against LSU and FSU. I personally don't think they are all that close in Football.

In Basketball Florida and OU have been to the same number of final fours. OU has been to 30 NCAA tournaments compared to 18 for Florida. They definitely get bonus points for a championship but I am not sure Florida has been more consistent than OU in basketball.

Florida won national championships in 2006 and 2007.... That's a big deal in terms of program prestige. They aren't as consistent as Oklahoma, but they have more prestige for winning championships.

That's not true. The last 25 years include the Blake and Schnellenberger foootball era, as well as the end of the Capel basketball era. Over that time period, Florida has won 5 national championships to OU's one.

Agreed... Florida is the premier football and basketball program combo of the modern era. Can't even really argue it, can you?

I believe....might be wrong..

OU was the first school to play for both a NC in football and men's bball in the same year - 1988 (lost both:facepalm )

Think UF actually did the same later but either won both or 1 of them..

You guys are crazy suggesting Florida is a better football program than OU based on the modern era or any other metric. OU has more wins, more conference championships, more Heisman winners, more consensus All Americans, more national championships, etc. etc. (Florida did beat OU in the only meeting)

Most importantly, even over the last 25 years, OU has been more consistent. OU has 8 seasons (including the Blake era) with 4 losses or more. Florida has 12. Go back to 1970 and it gets worse for Florida. Go back to the 50s and it gets worse. Since 2010, Florida has only posted one season with less than 4 losses, it was an 11 win season. OU has 7 seasons with 10+ wins, 5 with 11+ wins and two 12 win seasons. Florida was very good in the 90s and 20s but that is pretty much the history of Florida football.

Over the past 25 years, Florida football has 3 national championships, and OU has one. That's the key. The 25 year mark is where Florida football and basketball both started getting going. Prior to that, Florida wasn't very good in either sport.

We played both essentially on the opponents home field/court (Miami and KC).

many of us remember well beyond the last 25 years.

If the criteria is just the past 25 years, Florida obviously beats OU. As I previously posted, Florida was the team of the 2000s when combining football and basketball. They were probably #2 in the 1990s as well. They won’t be in the top 10 when the 2010s decade is over with...hence my point about how this cycles to different programs. OU is killing Florida this decade due to Florida’s struggles on the gridiron.

If the decade just ended now, no one program stands out as the team of the decade. However, if I had a vote, it would be Wisconsin #1 with OU in the running for #2 along with the likes of Oregon and Louisville. The reason I wouldn’t put OU #1 is due to our inconsistency in hoops. Wisconsin has simply been highly competitive in both sports for this entire decade.

Congratulations? We were talking about hte past 25 years, so remembering past that doesnt' have a whole lot to do with anything.
