When Capel came to OU, he hired a pretty good coaching staff. He brought Mark Cline (25 years experience) and Rod Barnes (Ole Miss Head Coach). Barnes left to be head coach at Georgia State and Capel replaced him with Taliferro who was a super recruiter out of Arkansas. Taliferro left after the Tiny Gallon incident and Cline left to be an assistant for Marshall University.

Now we have a staff that might work at Stephen F. Austin or UT - San Antonio because Capel could not hire anyone. With the new staff, our recruiting resembles those schools. We even hired our video director to be a coach last year. Which of the following does anyone think can recruit nationally?

I think the article is right, we look like Virginia Commonwealth. Our coaching staff (Assistants) look like they are from the Southland Conference or worse, that has a lot to do with it. No Assistant would take the job.

Betts
2006-present, Oklahoma Assistant Coach
2004-06, South Carolina State Head Coach
2003, Virginia Commonwealth Assistant Coach
1998-2002, College of Charleston Assistant Coach
1991-97, South Carolina State Assistant Coach
Feb.-Oct. 1995, SCSU Interim Head Coach

Goodman
2010-present, Oklahoma Assistant Coach
2006-10, Oklahoma Director of Operations
2001-06, Bucknell Assistant Coach
1999-2000, Susquehanna University Assistant Coach
1997-98, Barat College Assistant Coach

Phelps
2010-present, Oklahoma Assistant Coach
2006-2019 OU Video Director
2003-06, UT-San Antonio Assistant Coach
1999-03, Texas State Assistant Coach
1998-99, Baylor Assistant Coach
1994-98, Texas Lutheran Assistant Coach
1989-93, Texas Lutheran Assistant Coach

I've said this numerous times, but Betts just seems to me like a waste of a coaching spot. You never see him saying anything or instructing from the sidelines. He just looks like a bump on a log.

Phelps has been working with Blair, even though it may not appear that way, but I saw Phelps and Blair talking during the KU game after Blair made a mistake. Phelps was trying to calm him down and keep him from losing it mentally. I've seen him do other things from the TV which tells me he is really involved.

It's not that no one would take the job, it's that OU wasn't going to pony up the cash to hire "name" assistants. Just take a look at the article stickied at the top from the Tulsa World. The state of the basketball program from a financial standpoint is just as sad as the on the court results.

I don't think money had anything to do with it, it was more about job security. Mark Cline didn't leave because of money, he left because he saw the hand writing on the wall. Capel looked and couldn't get anyone to take the job.

You really need to check your facts before posting.

You telling me that he got a raise from Marshall. You always put posts out about checking facts then run away, just like last week with the APR, when you were absolutely wrong because retention counts half of the APR value. So players leaving count against you.

"Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one retention point for staying in school and one eligibility point for being academically eligible. A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by one thousand to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate score."

Yes, this means that Abdul Ahmed and TJ Taylor count against us. This means that TMG was a 0-2. It means Juan Pattillo was 0 -2. It means that Keith Clark was a 0-2. This also means that players leaving for the NBA count against you (aka. Blake, he is 1-1 he was ok academically but did not return). However, the real problem guys are the ones who are not passing or blow off the last semester and leave like TMG or Pattillo.

With Cline, here is a guy that has been around Capel's family for 20+ years then he bails from a BCS Conference school to a mid-major right after the Tiny Gallon incident. No way that he makes more money at Marshall.

To quote the OU Press Release:
Cline's relationship with the Capel family dates back to his days as an assistant coach at Fayetteville State (1989-93) where he served under Capel's father, Jeff Capel Jr. He transitioned with Capel Jr. to North Carolina A&T for the 1993-94 season before following him to Old Dominion where he spent five seasons.

I thought Cline left to be closer to his family but who knows if that is true.

That was the bulk of the reason, but I'm sure uncertainty made it easier to make the jump. It's easier to make the "right" decision for your family, if you think you might lose your job any way.

I don't really care if the assistants were video guys last year or mopped the floors during timeouts as long as they can teach the game and recruit.

That said, I've not seen much of that from these guys.

Capel really really needs a strong defensive minded assistant to help teach that aspect of the game. Throughout his tenure, I've seen many of his players grow and develop their offensive games. But, I've really not seen a lot of improvement defensively. I see the intensity there at times, but intensely taking bad angles on defense doesn't do much good.

Cam Clark is just as lost and clueless defensively today as he was early in the season.

I realize we're undersized this season down low and that hurts us overall as far as team defense. But, when it comes to basic defensive fundamentals, I haven't seen a lot of improvement this year, or really throughout Jeff's tenure. I wish he could find an assistant that could help in this area.

Lol, wut? Cam's grown into arguably our best defensive player.

I guess that could be the problem. When "the best defensive player" is out of position because he doesn't grasp the switch to a zone and gives up a layup.

Cade Davis is by far the best defensive player on the team.

to Speedy for derailing the thread by bragging about being right last week, but today he's wrong. Cline left due to family reasons. If you think you deserve more clarification than that, lift your mouse off the table and shove it square up your entitled a-holes.
