Over the course of the past week or so, as all of this conference realignment has been going down, couldn't help but think what's next down the road. With these super conferences beginning to form (and yes, the manifest destiny will eventually reach the SEC and ACC), is it possible the NCAA will become obsolete?
Personally, I think we're beginning to see the end of the NCAA as we know it. The schools along with their respective conferences are gaining more and more leverage on the organization and with the potential increase in revenues going forward, it's only a matter of time before they break away.
Basically all the NCAA is good for at this point is organizing and overseeing championships...especially at the Olympic sport level. That is really their only function which they do well. Implementing and enforcing their regulations has become a joke, and their main source of revenue is tied to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Just feel that the NCAA has become a watered down United Nations...they are only around for bureaucratic reasons.
What does everyone else think?
