Big 12 basketball: Predicting the conference finish

BY MIKE BALDWIN

1. Kansas: Looking for seventh straight title. So deep five bench players could start for a lot of teams.

2. Kansas State: Suspensions have hampered chemistry but Pullen and the 'Cats have Final Four potential.

3. Missouri: Full throttle Tigers are scoring 85.6 points, forcing 20 turnovers and have a deep roster.

4. Texas: Canadian imports provide a spark. Big non-conference wins a sign 'Horns are a postseason threat.

5. Baylor: Underachieving early but Bears have upside with LaceDarius Dunn and freshman star Perry Jones.

6. Texas A&M: Gritty Aggies aren't overly talented but play good defense and can dominate the boards.

7. Oklahoma State: Moses and Page are solid. Supporting cast key to making the NCAA Tournament.

8. Colorado: Buffaloes have two NBA caliber players. Won't be a gimme in Boulder but they lack depth.

9. Iowa State: Picked last in preseason by coaches, Cyclones are playing well under Fred Hoiberg.

10. Nebraska: Playing outstanding defense, Cornhuskers were a pleasant surprise in non-conference play.

11. Oklahoma: Undersized Sooners are in rebuilding mode. Defense, rebounding key to being competitive.

12. Texas Tech: Huge disappointment. League worst FG percentage defense a sign it might be a long year.

Probably about right. Could argue about KState being that high due to the suspensions and thier performance so far

All I can say is WOW. I have not seen a single tech game but i have seen us give up 50%+ from the field a few time this year.

Pretty conservative picks. Other than Iowa State, it looks pretty much like most preseason picks. (not saying that's wrong, just an observation)

The Friday before the Tech-Mizzou football game, one of the sportstalk shows here in KC interviewed the Tech PBP guy (about the basketball game). He asked the Tech PBP guy his prediction for how the Red Raiders would finish in basketball and the guy said, as serious as he could sound, 3rd overall. He said they would win 10-11 games.

The host of the show was stunned, so he stammered around for a second thinking the Tech PBP guy was joking but the Tech PBP guy stood his ground so the host said "well, that's bold", then moved along.

So, I'm kind of stunned Tech is this bad because it seems to me like nobody in Lubbock saw it coming.

It shouldn't stun you. Those people in Lubbock are as delusional as it comes when it comes to Texas Tech athletics.

I am stunned as well... They have 6 seniors. Pat Knight made a big deal before the season started that if he cant win with this group that he doesnt deserve to coach them, and that is exactly whats gonna happen.

PG: John Roberson- Good senior point guard. The guy has been around and productive forever.
SG: David Tairu: Good senior. 10-11 ppg guy. Good shooter.
SF: Brad Reese: Having a big year. Another good senior.
PF: Mike Singletary- Been an all-conference guy. Very good senior.

They should be winning.. I am shocked that they arent.

I'm shocked about Tech as well, that is awful given their talent.

11. Oklahoma: Undersized Sooners are in rebuilding mode. Defense, rebounding key to being competitive.

Not sure how we can be rebuilding if we don't have any bricks...
