Yep, they've had two good coaches in their history (and one of those two, Mr. Iba, saw a huge falloff in his final decade at the helm), which further belies the Oklahoma media's treatment of them as some kind of traditional basketball power.

O-State has had two great coaching stints. One is without equal, and the other came on board only after a disastrous NCAA investigation/forced sabbatical/fall from grace. Lucking into Sutton was the best thing that ever happened to O-State hoops. Looking back on it, it's really quite remarkable all the variables that were in play.

Sutton, his issues aside, was as good as the OU coaches I'm calling great.

Sutton and Coach Iba were most certainly great coaches. I would say that Iba is a legend actually.

While I think Bruce Drake deserves more credit than we give him ... OSU certainly wins in the legendary coach department. I'd put Billy Tubbs a step or two below him at about the same spot as Sutton.

So oswho has one legendary coach (you keep changing the standards/terminology, but whatever) and one good/great one -- and most all of their other coaches were not even decent.

OU has had four good/great coaches. I'll take that every time.

And legend or not, Iba went to just two NCAA tourneys in his final 16 seasons and his final five seasons were disastrous, with the aggies finishing 7th (four times) and 6th in the Big 8. Iba had 20 great seasons, but mostly struggled his final 16.

It may be that Bud would have continued to struggle, too, had he remained at OU, but it's not a sure thing: He had two bad seasons in 1960-61, but bounced back to win the conference in '62 and finish second in '63.

I won't argue against Iba as a legend, but the NCAA tournament at that time was not on par with the NIT. It's also far more difficult to win the NCAA tourney now. And imo, Sutton hasn't accomplished anymore than Billy, Kelvin or Lon.

I am not saying Iba is a legend because of his tournament results. He is a legend because of his contributions to the game.

Heck, Naismith invented the game and he had a losing record for his career. Does his record mean HE isn't a legend?

Just FWIW, but Eddie actually had the better winning %. IMO, if you use it on one (& I certainly do), then the other deserves it as well.
