"These players leaving is a good thing"

We get it, BOB. You think Capel did a horrible job this season, and you're obviously not alone in those thoughts. But, continuing to beat a dead horse is not accomplishing anything worthwhile, and it's not going to change the fact that Jeff Capel will be OU's coach next season.

Find something else to talk about. PLEASE! I'm not happy with the state of the program right now, and I'm more than disappointed with the way things are shaping up in recruiting. But I'm also smart enough to know that continuing to bash our head coach is counterproductive to OU's recruiting efforts. You are, too. You're just so determined to prove how right you are about Capel that you can't see the forest for the trees.

I'll cease with the bashing, but Ada, give me your thoughts as to why he's not hired an assistant coach. Seems if recruiting was more important, then why not find somebody who has some connections that can help get a recruit in here?

Do you really want to hire a coach solely based on that person possibly allowing you to get a recruit for this year?

I didn't say that's what I "wanted".

Just trying to figure out peoples thoughts on the subject.

Not Ada, but I'll throw in on this. I personally think that Jeff is taking a BIG step back and making sure that he doesn't screw this hire up. When things are going as poorly as they are right now, the WORST mistake you can make is trying to jump into solutions too quickly. From my perspective, him taking his time on this hire gives me more confidence, not less, that he is determined to fix this mess.

So, you don't have the inclination to think maybe Castiglione is doing the asst coach search?

Well, your posts obviously show your opinion on the matter.

Not really. I honestly can't figure out why it's taking so long. Maybe he is just taking his time, but we need all the help we can get in recruiting and one more person to make some calls and visits wouldn't hurt at this point.

JMO.

But making a search would also take him away from recruiting himself. A double edged sword IMO. I can see why he hasn't hired someone.

Not a good thing at all...but, if they didnt want to be here we dont want them back...would make things worse...

Jeff is trying to recruit right now. He's probably not going to hire an assistant till after he's done with this class.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I personally don't

I don't either, but I do think that Jeff is going to be very careful of who he presents to Joe as his choice. My personal preference is that that Capel get as many good recruits as possible, then sit down and evaluate a candidate for the assistant's job. Oh, and I'd prefer that whoever that assistant is, they not be a "recruiter"... as I think Capel can handle that job if he wanted to. FWIW, I've been praying that Tommy Griffin gets offered [and accepts] the job. To me, he is the perfect candidate.

I would love that! Tommy is a great person, coach, recruiter, and would bring discipline.

I will agree with you that it is not like football however, IMO its easier to turn around a basketball program in 1-3 years then a Fball program. If, and this is a big if, you recruit well a basketball team can recover from a bad season fairly quickly. In football you need a lot more depth, whereas in Basketball you can play 7 and get away with it. ...Hopefully we have 7. :)

Well we have 5 right now. we need atleast 2 more and neal to step up

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question, BOB. I have been gone since late morning. I was logged in because I forgot to log out before I left. Short term memory is one of the first things to go with senior citizens, you know. lol

I won't pretend to know why Capel hasn't hired another assistant. Mr.B!!!'s explanation makes a lot of sense to me. Even if Jeff already has someone in mind, he would be wise to check them out thoroughly first.

I do agree that an assistant with the right connections in recruiting would be hard to pass up. But we can't afford to take a chance on someone with the least bit of baggage. If I was in Capel's position, I would be very cautious about who I brought in as OT's replacement.

I can't disagree with this.

I consider it a good thing for one reason: we just lost everyone I ever heard any grumblings about work ethic, attitude problems, ineptitude, and generally weak attempts to adhere to the concept of team directed toward.

I am looking forward to seeing some players again who play tough basketball. I especially like that Capel has apparently said "no more entitlement" for players. No player should be so entitled to playing time that they are allowed to work any less hard than their teammates.

I am going to be watching this team and supporting them every step of the way next year. Wins feel great, but I can take losses as long as the guys on the court play with heart.
