This whole "least talent since blah blah" line is a bunch of hogwash

1 - I remember those pre-Bliss and pre-Tubbs years. YIKES!

2 - for that matter, Tubbs first teams and many of those "talented" teams played some bad ball

3 - not sure what the standard for "talent" is, but Kelvin's 2nd and 3rd teams were not exactly easy on the eyes.

4 - CERTAINLY more athleticism in this group than many that have worn the C&C and IMO smarter ballplayers.

5 - the most talented team doesn't always win the game. It's the team that plays best together.

I agree, cool.

I don't see how folks can't see the potential of Calvin Newell and Cameron Clark. Those two are right up there with any of the "good" recruits that OU basketball has landed since I have been a fan. I wouldn't sleep on TJ Taylor either. I have been really impressed with Drew Fitzgerald's body transformation and the way he is positioning himself down low in order to score in the paint.

Throw in Osby and Goff next season and I think we are back where we belong.

I guess I am missing something because nothing surprises me about this year.

The thing about this roster is they are all complimentary players. I can easily see Thompson, Pledger, Clark, Fitz, and Cade as starters or first off the bench players for past great sooner teams. We just don't have any Najeras, Prices, Taj, and Blakes to pair them up with.

You know what it sounds like when someone takes a hammer and hits the nail on the head? It sounds just like this post. Great insight.

I think it's too early to write off Cam as being a go-to, best player, difference maker type of player.

I also think that Osby has that potential for next year's squad.

Osby is definetely a lineman. I think Clark will be an NBA guy. Hope the coaches give him some freedom to expand his game. Billy Tubbs is so knowledgeable on the play by play and he referenced the fact that OU doesnt have anyone that can create there own shots. Clark and Newell have that potential.

Talented, yes, but comparatively not near as talented as some other teams in the Big12 and I think most peoples fears, mine included, is that we are going to get left in the dust talent wise. We do NOT have more talent than Kansas, K-State, Baylor, Texas, and Missouri right now. Once we go to 10 teams we have to play those schools twice a year, my fear is that we will no longer be in the upper half of the conference. I hope I am wrong, but I just do not see Capel being able to recruit us out of this rut. He definitely did not recruit well enough to keep us at a competitive level and in my opinion the jury is still out on whether he can take less talented team and "Coach" them up into a winning "team". This year and next will go along way to answering that question.

Why?
'Cause the BanMan CAN!

Fair points. And I agree.

Re: This whole "least talent since blah blah" line is a bunch of hogwash

Was Capel's recruiting bad? I think it was just a terrible miscalculation.

Well, that is all subjective I suppose, but he seems to miscalculate quite a bit every year, lets examine the classes;

2006

SG 18 Tony Crocker
SF 17 Keith Clark

Batting .500, not bad for your first year and everyone from the recruited class defecting......

2007

PG NR Tony Neysmith
SF NR Chris Early
PF 5 Blake Griffin
SG NR Cade Davis

Again .500 decent for second year, but we are looking at .500 with one STAR and one "presumed" bench player\shooting specialist, good not GREAT....

2008

SF JC NR Kyle Cannon
PF JC Juan Patillo
SG 6 Willie Warren
SF 14 Ray Willis
C JC Orlando Allen

Yikes.....Now we are looking at .200, not good....

2009

C 3 Keith Gallon
C 13 Andrew Fitzgerald
PG 4 Tommy Mason-Griffin
SG 24 Steven Pledger
C 22 Kyle Hardrick

Again, looking at about .400 in the 4th year of recruiting, not a good pattern. No matter how you slice it, mis-judgement, bad character, these were players Capel recruited so he is SOLELY responsible for the train wreck that was last year and of these 16 athletes that he recruited, 6 (again that is SIX) I would consider decent recruits. That is a .375 average there is now way to pretty up that pig........

In Sampsons early years he always had one go to guy to score. Who will that be for us? Who can get 18 a night? Fitz, maybe. Pledger? Maybe. For us to be competitive we need someone to get that every night.

You are right my friend.

I think it's Fitz. He left some points on the floor the first two games.

How can we determine fitz can score 15-20 ppt right now? He is playing against terrible talent...those easy high to low post "open" layups he has had will be few and far between once we starting playing teams with talent....I believe you pressure thompson at the high post and he will not be able to make those open passes....fitz has not proven he can play back to the basket and be our primary scorer...

Although he has played well and will be a good player, he is no primary scorer. Cam to me will be that guy hitting the open jumpers

Maybe it will end up being Cam, but based solely on the first 2 games, I would say it's most likely to be Fitz. You may be correct that Fitz is playing against horrible teams, but so is Cam, and so far, Fitz is the one scoring more. However, Cam will probably improve as the season goes on.

I agree. But to me fitz is making WIDE open layups....or getting fouled when attempting to make wide open layups...he hasnt shown to me that he can play back to the basket...in big 12 play there will be few wide open layups in our half court set

Re: This whole "least talent since blah blah" line is a bunch of hogwash

I think overrated may be a better term.

You think TMG was overrated? I think he was immature, a bit selfish and not interested in being a college athlete but I don't think he was overrated.

I aslo don't think Tiny was overrated. He was pretty darn good for a freshman and easily could have been one of the best big guys in the Big XII had he been allowed to stay in school. Tiny is extremely talented and I would not be shocked to see him make it in the NBA one day. He made that a whole lot harder on himself by losing his abiltyt to play in college but you just don't see guys with his size and agility all that often. If he learns to be a beast on the inside, his touch, passing and agility would make him a unique player.

WW is playing in the NBA so I would not say he is/was overrated. He was also a bit selfish and immature but he certainly had talent.

I personally think Capel's biggest problem is all the lost players rather than talent.

So if noone is overrated then capel did a terrible terrible job coaching them.....
