They won't win many times when Cam shoots 6-20 from the field. That's a lot of shots for someone who only shot 30%.
I agree, Cam has to shoot the ball better if he is going to take twice as many shots as anyone else on the team. But, in his defense, he shot the ball pretty well in the other four games. Despite his off night in the finale, he finished the five-game stretch with a 52% (37 of 71) average from the field.
I think most of us will agree that this OU team has a very small margin of error. There are no real stars, no go-to guy like Romero last year who can find a way to score when everyone else is struggling. If they're going to win a respectable number of their games this season, it will have to be with great
team defense and a solid performance offensively from several key players, or from enough of them to take up the slack if someone has a bad night.
There were several factors in this game that contributed to the loss, among them too many players who didn't step up and do their part. The telling stat to me, though, was a high number of turnovers (18) when Evreux seemed to catch our kids by surprise by being a lot more physical than any of the previous four teams. Physical play is something our guards better get used to, because they'll see a lot more of it in the conference portion of our season.
Obviously, the team did not perform well in several areas. But I think the competition may have had something to do with it. And, in the end that may benefit this OU team more than the easy wins in the first four games.
