Trae Young summer league

Report from the Associated Press...

Jaren Jackson Jr., the fourth pick in the NBA draft, outshined No. 5 overall pick and former Oklahoma Sooner Trae Young in the NBA Summer League debut for both players.

...

Young, who averaged 27.4 points per game last season for Oklahoma, missed all nine shot attempts in the first half, including six 3-pointers. The Big 12 Freshman of the Year struggled to recover after air-balling his first two shots and finished with 16 points on 4-of-20 shooting.

He was 1 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Seems kinda like a typical Trae Young shooting day.... A few samples against good competition last year:

2-11 from 3 against Baylor
0-9 from 3 against Texas Tech
2-14 from 3 against Texas
1-7 from 3 against Kansas
3-10 from 3 against Texas
2-10 from 3 against Kansas State

nothing like cherry picking

other games vs good competition

against #25 USC on the road 4-11 from 3
against #3 Wichita St on the road 4-11 from 3
against #10 TCU on the road 6-14 from 3
against #16 TCU at home 10-18 from 3
against #8 tech at home 4-10 from 3
against #5 ku at home 2-3 from 3
against #19 WVU at home 4-10 from 3

This guy went from unbelievable to very average last year. Not sure what to think anymore. I feel he thinks of himself more highly than he ought.

I notice you leave out his two games against TCU, his games against Arkansas, WSU, and Oregon, and his other games against Baylor, K-State, KU, and Tech. I guess those games against quality opponents don't count because they don't support your predetermined conclusion.

I understand that some of you are determined to criticize any and everything associated with OU basketball, but you are smarter than this. Anyone could cherry pick several of LeBron's or Durant's worst shooting games and make it look like they are terrible players. Also, interesting for you to now place so much emphasis on a summer league game less than 24 hours after you declared it to be meaningless and a glorified scrimmage.

I just picked some losses... didn't spend much time on it.

I didn't say it meant anything... I just said it looked like a typical game for Trae Young. Going 1-11 (or something like that) from 3 isn't that unusual for him. He had lots of games like that. The definition of typical is "characteristic of a particular person or thing".... What I said was accurate.

He only shot 32% from 3 in Big 12 play, and 39% from the field... Pretty weird stat for a guy who is supposed to be Steph Curry, wouldnt you say?... He isn't big, he isn't overly athletic, he isn't long, etc. His value is shooting and passing, yet he had the worst percentage on the team in conference play. His Big 12 assist-to-turnover ratio was 1.32, which wouldn't rank top 10 or 12 (or something like that) in the league.

His next game he will likely go 6-17 or something from 3 and some of them will be very really deep and people will get super happy again.

because they don't support your predetermined conclusion.

My conclusion is based on numbers, which are referenced above.

Let’s be honest here. Trae is no Stephen Curry. He is a streaky shooter, at best, with the potential to be that good if he finds a way to avoid the stinkers from long distance that were fairly common toward the end of last season.

He didn’t get off to a good start with his 4 of 20 (1 of 11 from three) debut in his first summer league game.

You're entirely right.

But then Steph Curry was no Steph Curry, either, at this stage of his career.

Agreed. Far from it actually. That’s why I said Trae has the potential to be like Steph at some point in his career. Even if he’s not, I still feel he will be a NBA player OU fans can point to with a great deal of pride. I’m already a Hawk fan.

I honestly don't know what to expect. I'll be pulling for him for sure, and I think he's got the work ethic and passion to continue to grow as a player. But I wouldn't begin to predict what his ceiling will be. I really don't know.

I love OU players, but watching TY from HS>NCAA>Summer league I just don't like his game. Give me Isaiah, Hollis, Mookie, Quannas any day. Even if TY gets it going offensively, he still gives up just as much on the other side.

The hate for trae young is second only to another certain crazy situation in politics where someone is criticized for anything possible under the sun but hes great

His game is going to have to evolve. He can't be a volume shooter as a rookie in the NBA. Has to keep focusing on setting guys up (which he did a great job of tonight, but the Hawks summer roster sucks). Scoring will come when it comes.

Trae was a top 5 pick, and outside of Mookie, those guys weren't even NBA guys (I know Cousins was borderline). Trae struggled in the second half of the season, but he's been far too heavily criticized on this board.

You seem unwilling to allow for the possibility that his game might improve and evolve over time. Blake Griffin's certainly did; so did Steph Curry's.

I was referring for OU, not the NBA.

He will definitely improve & might be a good NBA player, but I don't like his style of play.

Good news for you because OU will never get another guy like him and quite frankly no one probably will. He led the nation in scoring and assists for the first time ever (as a freshman no less) so the chances of someone accomplishing that again are about 0.0000000000000001%.

Ou fans typically don’t know **** about basketball. They also eat their own like no other. It is a sad sight to see.

But you'll see a lot better players, he didn't even win conference POY. He led the nation in scoring (on 42% shooting) and led in assists (with a 1.6:1 ratio). That just tells me his usage rate was insane bc that's what he was promised. He also was by far the worst defender on the court each game. He was the 3rd or 4th best pg in college this year.

I love most of OU players, but just don't like the way he plays.
