Transfer Portal 2025

So for those who can be objective, I’d be interested to hear people’s initial thoughts, assuming this is the final version of the roster for all intents of purposes. It’s a very good portal class, but I’ve yet to see us in any of the reputable national top 25 (or even top 30 or 35).

My thoughts: people recognize center as a weakness, and are well aware that they have seen Moser’s teams collapse every season in conference play. I’d also guess that national analysts have lower expectations for Jones and JN than some of our fans who trust the somewhat biased reports of how those guys looked before their injuries.

I’m very curious to see how playing time shakes out. If Reid really starts at the three, it would alleviate some of the size concerns, but we would lose a lot of spacing unless he drastically improves as a shooter in one offseason. Obviously starting isn’t necessarily the most important thing, but overall distribution of the minutes will be important. I hope we don’t waste a couple months like we did this season by having Mo collecting dust behind two guys he should have been in front of.

I at least feel much better knowing we have several guys who have proven themselves to be solid to very good at the D-1 level. I personally don’t include JN and Jones as proven commodities since even Jones hasn’t played against high level competition, and I put very little stock in preseason reports coming out of most programs. If Sampson or Self or Izzo or Pitino says something positive about a player, you can generally trust it, but most coaches like to pump their guys’ tires to the media whether it’s true or not. I really hope they both are the guys we have heard about, but I think it’s a fair question.

Ryan Minor did both for a couple years. I think he went all in on basketball his last year if I remember right.
I think this is correct. Got drafted after his JR year in baseball but came back to play basketball in 1995-96. Got drafted in both sports in 1996, IIRC.

IIRC, drafted by the Mets, then the Orioles in 1996. Picked by Sixers as the 3rd pick in the 2nd round in '96, which cursed him to a non-guaranteed contract.

Best two way player I can remember at OU. Brandon Jones was really solid at both. Kyler never lived up to his potential in baseball at OU due to injuries.

RIP #12.

Generally fair wichita. Have to admit though, on paper, it looks like our best roster.

No way to really though, discussion is academic at this point, as most of us haven’t seen most the guys play. At least I haven’t. Kids coming back from injury, some are freshmen, blair might play baseball, and. davis may go pro.

This is why i said in an earlier post, I would really like to go to a preseason practice to get my eyes on the guys.

I love and am excited about the team’s potential.

Kyler ended up being the 9th pick overall.

Cade Horton was a walk-on for the football team as a backup QB. Also probably had the most improbable 3B turned pitcher turned first round pick stories ever. You couldn't make his 2022 season up. He went from literally not even a pitcher to a top 10 pick. He's probably about to make his debut with the Cubs sometime this year.

I found probably the most famous Basketball/Baseball cross over player. Denny Price. He was all Big 8 in both. May have heard of his sons too.

i think the point is that maybe wague would have gotten to where he was at the end of the season much much faster if he was playing big min in the Non con
"Maybe" is the key there. The notion that he was showing out in practice but PM was "obsessed" with Sam is a reach. And if he wasn't showing out in practice (and he certainly wasn't in games until the home stretch), then it's just the typical "our best player is on the bench" stuff that fans throw out there all the time with little to no basis.

Yeah I know he was a high pick. My point is he had one really good year at baseball in 2018. I think he pulled a hammy going into second late in the year or thr Big XiI Tourney. My post meant his potential, hence the #9 pick, was greater than his career at OU baseball.

Another two sporter that excelled more at baseball was Cody Thomas.

Ryan Minor is the only baseball/basketball or basketball/football that I remember excelling at both, especially at a high level in both

brown/pack/davis appear to be pretty good players. reid was top 20 out of high school so someone thinks his talent level/ceiling is pretty high.
hopefully those 4 live up to their billing and can hide the deficiency at center.
i think the roster is pm's best so far. now he has to do a better job of coaching and win more games...especially at home.

Yea because as we all know, Moser has no track record of keeping better players on the bench. 🤦‍♂️

Rothstein does a 45 team ranking and we've quickly moved into it the last 2 weeks. Lunardi (he's average imo) has us as an 8/9 seed. That sounds about right. We're not on paper a top 25 team but that doesn't mean we can't have a guy or two explode like Fears last year and be a solid top 30-35 team.

I think Bobby Jack was All-Big 8 in both baseball and basketball, but that was a little bit before my time. He played for John McLeod in basketball, a couple of years before Alvan Adams' debut in the fall of 1972.

Yea I’ve posted several times about his top 40. We have settled in at 39. If the feeling is this is clearly our best roster under him, what’s keeping us at a spot that would be firmly bubble territory if that’s how it plays out? I think we all want us to break through that glass ceiling. I mainly find it interesting because most analysts really like our portal class, and usually the quality of a portal class is going to relate pretty closely to preseason ratings. Like I said, I think it’s the issue in the middle, and not wanting to get fooled into getting too high on a Moser team till he shows he can sustain in conference. Just my two cents.

Yes, I can see that as a legit concern. As I was walking out of the arena in Charlotte after we beat Michigan in December (no doubt the high point of the season), I told the lady who went with me: "The conference season is going to be brutal if we don't get better play in the post". While I'm not trying to hijack the thread with an NBA example, it is applicable here. The LA Lakers have two of the best players in the world in LeBron James and Luka Doncic...but couldn't get out of the first round because they don't have a low-post presence. I have to believe it's important to have that at every level of hoops.

He taught himself a slider right before the NCAA Tourney that was unhittable.
