Transfer Portal 2025

My deal is this. If Jones is the shooter we were led to believe and Forsythe improves even a little, we don’t need more shooting. Need a ball handler who can break the defense down. Collins fits that role.
You need more than two shooters, and you would like neither of them to be "ifs."

I know a lot of people complain about PM's roster turnover, and yeah, it's an issue, but this is the second year in a row that Bill Self has been hit with so many departures that he can count the remaining players on one hand. Of course, he's also backfilling them with higher-quality talent than PM has so far or can get.

But just to point out- it's Kansas- and players are leaving in mass from a team a couple of years removed from a NC, a blueblood, a HOF coach, a diehard fanbase, great facilities, superior NIL, and unlimited resources and support.

It's not just a PM problem, or our lack of support- it's a college basketball problem.

will be interesting to see if self can adapt to the new rules.
he was widely considered a hall of fame coach when he was buying the best high school players on the down low.
now....as the playing field has been leveled....he seems to be struggling

Not sure if I agree with this. As a LOT have pointed out on this board, if Fears fell in PM's lap, you HAVE to say the same about Mayo last year given he was from Lawrence. He turned out to be the best transfer they had while Self signed Griffen (Alabama) and Storrs (Wisconsin) who were blah at best. Coit (Northern Illinois) was also one of the best shooters they had, and they got him last second as well. Saying he got "higher-quality talent" is possibly true on paper but on the court, the guys that should have been the better players, just weren't. Hence the 7 seed for KU and the roster turnover again this year. They also paid a lot more for guys like Griffen and Storrs that didn't work out anywhere close to what they thought they would be.

I'm not really concerned about the number of guys leaving at this point. That was a concern the first two or three years, when we were getting hit way worse than other schools, and we were losing key guys who Moser wanted to build around.

The issue now is that while some coaches seem good at putting together teams on the fly and not missing a beat, Moser has not shown that ability. Again, we struck gold with Fears as a high school recruit, but the portal has generally hurt us more than it has helped.

I love seeing KU having problems. 😁. I work with a handful of KU fans and get sooo sick and tired of them. The last two seasons have been a s-show for Self and a program like KU.
My co-worker actually wants to fire self. I told him that we will take him (as much of a pompous ass he is, i would still take his coaching)

not sure about that.
i think self has proven he's a coach that needs superior talent to win. his coaching is suspect imo.
he would fail miserably at a place like ou. especially in the new landscape of college ball.

I enjoy seeing them lose, too, but then I realize that as "bad" as their basketball season was, our football team was far worse.

Next season will be huge for Self. He seemed to address their deficiencies last offseason, which is why people were so high on them entering the season. And they did play very well the first month, but then it fell apart. Their incoming PG brings them a level of talent and athleticism they haven't had the past couple years, but obviously he needs to now replace just about the entire roster. If they have another down year, their fans will get even more restless. He has long since shown how great a coach he is, but like everyone, he deserves to be criticized when he makes mistakes with his roster. The pieces didn't really fit this year.

disagree. pm has proven he can evaluate talent. he's brought in some pretty good players. he's also attempted to bring in some pretty good players that for whatever reason....he was not able to seal the deal. he tried to get pedulla and garrison last year and a few others i can't remember off the top of my head.
those would have made a "complete" roster. if it came down to not having enough money to compete....u can't blame pm for that. do you expect him to pull 5 cheap rabbits out of his hat that turn into all conference players?
To each their own but...

I can't put poor evals, bad recruiting strategies (like putting most of your eggs into the Garrison/Pedulla/Overton in-state basket + Aaron Scott + thinking he had a shot with Kadary Richmond), lack of good evaluations/on-staff evaluators, etc under the "OU is broke" umbrella.

While EVERYONE knows OU is behind the 8-ball NIL-wise, IMO, that's even more reason to do better as a staff.

I have to blame Moser for Kobe, Brycen, Duke (somewhat), Luke, etc, and if he takes Frankie (and it doesn't work). I have to blame Moser for having to settle on Wague last year (I know Mo played better than expected) and forcing Godwin to start. OU was outrebounded almost all season (in-conference).

Last year, my dumbass brought up a kid named Samage Teel (Presbyterian was his school LY) as someone I liked better than Elvis (off-the-bench combo guard).

Teel's Indy St numbers:

I have no doubt in my mind that Teel would have been better than Elvis. Teel is in the portal again...but would need another year to be granted (D2). I would take him over Frankie while adding (spending a high amount on) someone like Jaron Pierre (example).

If you're broke, evaluate better. Hire a better staff (not just assistants but roster guys, analytic guys, etc). Don't be stubborn, force Joe C into hiring a GM (lead organizer).

We're talking about a coach who limped into the tourney once in four years. If Moser was 4-for-4, I'd eat my (potential) Frankie "salad" with a smile.

However, the odds suggest that he'll be a bad take, and OU will be hovering around the bubble again. Moser is on a hot seat still (duh). Things should be getting better, not staying the same, or possibly getting worse. At this point, I honestly blame his bosses for continuing to allow it.

Have Moser's evals all been bad? No, just most. You have to give him credit for Fears, Soares, and Moore (plus whoever else). But ask yourself, have his additions been mostly bad or good?

No, I don't expect every "cheap" option to be all-conference. I do expect a coach that's making millions, with 21 years as a head coach, on a hot seat, to not take point guards who shoot 58% from the FT, who no one else really wants (clear message that he's not a valuable asset). I do expect better evaluations, sure.

That said, we'll see. It's early. While I think Frankie would be a terrible take, I'm always going to wait until I see the whole construct.

But last year, I predicted 5-13 in-conference (came close) for a reason. Being in the SEC is like an arms race. Other teams continue to load up. You have to do better, keep up with the "joneses".

I'm curious that we haven't heard much on Rylan Griffen. We were leading on him out of high school until LK retired and he ended up at Bama. Very good shooter and long wing. Went to KU and didn't play this year, but that feels like it might've tanked his value a bit and we could get him relatively cheap. That's a guy I'd love to see end up at OU. Fascinating that nothing has seemingly happened with him from what I've gathered
