Transfer Portal 2027

That is wild to me.

Wild that a good SEC team would promise him a starting spot. And wild that he wouldn't take it, assuming the money is right.

If Atak is starting for OU next year, we're not Dancing. Bookmark this. Screen shot it. Print it off.
Anyone "promising" a starting spot this early in portal season for a player like Atak in the SEC (supposedly an upper tier team at that) is FOS. I want Atak to stay, and I want him in the rotation getting 18-25 mpg, but he doesn't necessarily need to start.

he does need to start.
he just needs a coach that can coach him up.
apparently there's one out there who is confident he can coach atak into a starter.
if he stays....crown moser will bench him inexplicably for long stretches.

brown/reid/atak ...add a top guard and center from the portal and most competent coaches could take that lineup to the big dance.

I think there is a world were Atak is a 15ppg guy next season where ever he is .. he is only going to be stronger and he very very long ..

I'd be totally fine with him starting. But, if we end up getting a better player in the portal, I'm also fine with him being the 6th man...the key is he needs to get 20+ minutes. He's too good of a shooter to not play due to defense. Like I've said in other posts...he needs to get up a minimum of 8+ 3's a game.

Score 15. Give up 20.

If you surround him with guys that can cover his deficiencies, he might can play a lot and not hurt you. But there aren't many players around the country that are just three point gunners that do NOTHING else even average, that are a net success.

It's also entirely possible this is the highest 3 point percentage that Atak ever has for a season.

Put another way, we need to get a lot better on defense.

You don't accomplish that by moving a guy like Atak into the starting lineup.

Atak was one of the worst 2-3 players in the SEC last year in defense according to Evan Miyakawa. That's BAD.

We’re in position to be processing Atak, but he definitely cannot be a starter either.

I just looked back and last season, we had Davis and Pack in the boat by April 7 and April 9. I know the portal doesn't officially open April 7 this year, so I wonder how that will affect the timeline.

Portal opened last year on March 24th. So roughly be last week of April to be on the same timeline.

I think the most interesting thing will be what we prioritize in the portal this year. Every year there seems to be a clear theme in players we target and every year it seems to be different from the last. That's been one of my frustrations with this regime. It doesn't feel like they know what they want from a player build perspective. There has been little to no consistency or identity for the last 5 seasons.

To that point, go look at a team like Houston. And yes, I know, Houston has more money to spend, but Kelvin has built his starting lineup and roster to look almost identical year after year after year.

PoMo hasn't done that because he's overreacted to what the team didn't do well in the season that just ended, and over-compensated in what he chased. Which just created more issues. I strongly suspect he's going to after a really good defensive big, thinking that will alleviate the defensive problems we had this year. Even if that just creates offensive issues b/c that player isn't a great offensive player and is terrible for spacing. OR.....he could go spend his entire NIL budget on a really good big that is a big upgrade, but he'll sacrifice the talent we need at the guard spots, and the big man upgrade won't matter much.

This is spot on. I have no doubt that he will emphasize defense after this season’s debacle. Which is fine, as long as it doesn’t result in a team that can’t score or lacks athleticism. Every time he tries to plug one hole, another two or three form.

This is why they need to get with the times and hire a GM. I don't think Brock is cut out for it. At the very least, build a complimentary roster.
