Transfer Portal 2027

I think the difference is these high level kids (typically, but not all) have a much shorter learning curve. Fears for example, was much improved from day 1 to the end of the season.
Kids are ranked high because they are either obliterating their current competition or somebody thinks they have the athleticism and skills after further development to be elite. Not all kids that have that athleticism can either a) develop the skills they need, or b) have the work ethic and right frame of mind.

None of that is a statement about the Mingo's, but in general. It's why I'm not nearly as high on a guy like Rooths. If I'm re-recruiting a 20 years old, I care more about how they've developed and what they are now, rather than what they still can be. Two years in college is plenty of time to have made an impact if somebody has the goods.

OU is probably never going to get fully developed players from the portal, and certainly not from a place like Louisville.

Taking a swing at a front court player with big upside is worth it imo, but there are risks.

Maybe not across the board, but a guy like Pack was about as developed as the come. Brown was good "day 1" in Norman. Davis was fairly developed, even if limited.

I'm just not a fan of taking a bunch of athletic kids that haven't shot well, and hoping a few of them start shooting well. I don't like being back at defense, but I don't think PoMo is a good enough coach to be bad at offense and still win games either. We've seen that. PoMo SHOULD be able to teach defense. That was literally his calling card coming from Loyola. I'd still rather get guys that can score it, and figure out how to defend. I'm fine having a Center that is mostly defense. But not a Center, a PF, and one of our starting guards, all while Reid is our starting 3.

I should’ve specified front court players. I agree we can get some really solid guards.

Good read and liked the quote toward the end....
"I do think that many teams who overspend on bigs trying to chase the Michigan blueprint will end up being disappointed with the production they get from their rosters. Teams that buck the trend by seeking value elsewhere may be more successful."

I agree with this. Those teams that get the top bigs will be happy; those who overpay for the Brandon Garrisons just to say "we got a P5 big" will be disappointed. Even this year, there aren't a lot of big-time front-court players like at UF or Michigan. Getting quality shooters and scorers in the backcourt, with solid rebounders and defenders who are skilled with the rock at the wing and the 4, sounds like a better plan for "budget-conscious" teams. The make up or plan of the team last year wasn't bad- just didn't have the depth to support it, and maybe missing another consistent scorer in the lineup.

And BTW, this article points out that we should be skeptical on how we are good in NIL as it's "substantially more" on TOS, or Denny pledging a lot more resources. As this points out, we could go from the rumored $6-7MM from last year and jump to $12-14MM (a substantial increase) and still be in the same place of bottom 3-4 of the league.

If we want to get over the hump and land real difference makers, especially in the front-court, it's going to take more.

I'm dying over here. Announce the damn center already so I can decide if I want to have any hope for next year!!! :ROFLMAO:😭
