Has 17 straight 20 win seasons... How is he still at Minnesota? CBS just said Auburn was coming after him? Can a guy with a career .700 winning percentage and a National Title not get better then the Auburn job?

Tubby has told them he wants to stay at Minnesota.

If for whatever reason Capel is gone within the next couple of years the first phone call Joe C needs to make is Tubby Smith.

You are getting a little ahead of yourself here. Let's see what Capel can do with the current situation.

I was just saying if that ever happens. I don't really think it will and it if does Tubby may be at a better job than Minnesota for all we know.

I understand, but a lot of these other folks don't. I'd hate to see you get baned.

I think most people agree here that we can't have too many years like this one and have any coach survive no matter how good a guy he is. I like Jeff and I hope he succeeds.

would Tubby have come here after Kelvin left?

Apparently not. He felt the need to say that while he was honored to be mentioned as a candidate, that he would be staying at Kentucky, instead. Of course, he only stayed there one more year. He was offered the OU job before Kelvin (when he was at Tulsa) in '94, but declined. He apparently was holding out for...Georgia?

I think as fans, we can take a hint - he doesn't want to coach here.

Oklahoma now is at a lot better position than it was when Sampson took over. I don't think anyone put us as a top 25 type program back then like they do now.

I think we've got to try if the job comes open again soon. Tubby does it the right way with the right guys...he's coached so many successful seasons at so many universities and is still squeaky clean.

You're joking, right? Kelvin Sampson has publicly said more than once that "I don't know if I would have come here had Billy Tubbs not accomplished what he did." Our best run EVER was from '83 - '90 which we lost a total of TWO home games, and won 15 NCAA Tournament games. We weren't THAT FAR removed from being a national power. My only guess for why you posted that is you were too young at that time.

I think Minnesota is Tubby's last job. I think he would have come to OU after Kelvin left, but he hadn't been fired from Kentucky yet.

Nick, please accept my apology for the sarcastic remark in my previous post. I'm probably a bit on edge like everyone else around here. With that said, OU was a very good basketball job in 1994 - much, much, much better than it was in 1980. Tubby simply did not want to coach here. He went to Georgia one year later - a huge step down from OU whether the year is 1994, 2004 or 2014.

The previous poster may be correct in that Tubby didn't come here in 2006 due to timing. However, I can't help but think he wanted out of Kentucky by that time and would have left had the right job popped up. Regardless, the previous poster is likely correct in that this is Tubby's last job.

Of course, I hope this is all moot and Jeff Capel gets things turned around next season.

after being at Tulsa I dont think Tubby would want to come to Norman.

I'm not saying it wasn't a better job than in 1980. I'm just saying that when 2 coaches did what Kelvin and Billy did which was make us basically the 2nd best program in the Big 12 and sometimes the best program in the Big 8/12 over 2 decades that's putting it a different level than just one coach over about 10-12 years.
