Washington

OU girl - with a couple of minutes left in the game (I think), Sherri went to a half court trap. We had just given up a few baskets, and the defense threw Washington completely out of rhythm. I think it caught them off guard. The commentators mentioned it, as well.

I think sticking with Edwards in the second half was a great move, as well. Something about having her and Ortiz on the floor made a difference. I think I prefer Edwards out there over Wyatt.

SK,

You watched the game, so could you give some details about that defensive move near the end? It was not clearly explained on the radio broadcast.

Did it lead to Maddie's block?

On the block play Plum hustled it up court after Edwards layup. We were in man instead of the zone as they tried to use Plum driving in transition. Edwards used her quickness to force Plum into a tough drive and Maddie came over to help and basically blocked it so definitively that she stole it also.

The good defensive move was playing the 1-3-1 zone trap and that kept Plum from being able to control the action.

Was a great ugly win! Big for the team. Most players had their moments during the game but I didn't think anyone was great for the whole game. But to hang in there behind most of the game, on the road against a decent team, is an important step for this team. Remember we're also playing without Gioya (I'm afraid she won't be able to play this year) and she is a big loss for this team but they are becoming a team in spite of her not being able to play. Good win today!

Strong 4th quarter again. Strong play by Maddie, KayKay and Edwards down the stretch.

Most of the game we had nothing inside either by the post players or the others on penetration. And not hitting treys all that well. Maddie and Little did get two very good clean drives to the hoop.

I haven't seen the box score but I suspect we got out rebounded badly. Most of the time we had no more than one in any kind of inside rebounding position of offense and no more than two on defense. Looks like we are trying to get out to run, but if we don't get the boards you can't run.

I know we were hurting on second chance points at the half. Second half didn't look any better. Maybe the stats will prove me wrong.

Plum a handfull as usual. We were having trouble getting in solid team defense in the fourth quarter until the final minutes and Plum made us pay.

I wish we would shoot more pullup jumpers. We seem to penetrate well but try to go all the way or make an impossible dish off too often. Little particularly has a nice pullup jumper and I think Maddie could kill them if she would pullup and shoot more often.

We just don't get many easy shots. Mostly treys and tough shots inside. When KayKay and ViVi are on they do a good job but our outside players lose the ball or shoot a really tough shot off of drives. If you watch UConn, Notre Dame and Baylor they get a lot of easy shots. We don't very often.

Looking at live stats we outrebounded them 46-41. Suprised me. Seemed like they got a lot of boards and beat us on a lot of 50/50 balls. shows how little I know.

We actually won the rebound total, 46-41. I think most of it came late. We lost on points in the paint (26-32), second chance points (7-11), fast break points (4-6), and points off turnovers (7-17). We also had more turnovers, 17-9. Washington had more blocks (6-4) and steals (9-4).

We had a better shooting percentage, and we had nine more points off of threes (10-26 vs 7-27). We also had more bench points, 18-2. That may have been the win right there. T'Ona and Maddie each had four points in the last two minutes, and T'Ona was a bench player. She outscored their bench in the last 1:47.

I don't know that Washington had a pure point guard who could work the ball against the press. That may have done it.

I just like the grit this team is showing. Down 10 away from home, I wondered if the kids would bow their backs and toughen up down the stretch. It appears this is becoming a fourth quarter team. A mature team at that. Really good production from our posts. Vivi and Kaylon 17 points and 15 boards. Treece seemed to play okay during her stretch, except struggled with her shot. With the struggles of A&M, we could win out heading to conference play. Going to be fun to watch.

I wonder if tonight offered a second chance at a new beginning. After losing to North Texas, we had somewhat of a new beginning against BYU when Maddie jumped out to 13 points in the first quarter. Someone had hit the on switch.

Against North Texas, Peyton had an OK game. Kay Kay was horrid. We really didn't have anyone step up to replace the points that Peyton, Gabbi, and Kay Kay weren't scoring. Maddie did. But, rather than keeping the string going, she seemed to back off and play distributor. Others scored, but Maddie wasn't hitting the fifteen or more a game that Sherri had anticipate.

Tonight, we started slowly once again. Kay Kay didn't score in the first half. Peyton had an off night. At halftime, Maddie only had 8 points, but that was the team lead. Two threes and a layup was enough to lead the team. But, we were trailing. We did have some nice shots from Derica to keep us in the game, and Treece had hit a trey. But, we were not going to win that way.

Peyton really didn't have a good night. Not every night will be a good night. But, the second half had a revitalized Kay Kay, and we had the lead at the end of three. But, Maddie and Kay Kay were in foul trouble. We had some contributions from everyone, just enough. But, it kept us close until Maddie and T'Ona took over. Maddie and T'Ona are quite simply two athletes for whom Washington has no answer if they come to play.

What this does is to provide some cover for others. There is no need to be perfect if Maddie comes to play. She, as Sherri says, is the X factor. She can be whatever you need on a given night. She, as Sherri said, should have hit 30. That means that Derica can relax on her shot. Peyton doesn't have to score twenty. Gabbi can score when she gets the opportunity. Maddie is good for some given activity that will help you win. Sherri kind of wishes she would shoot more and go off on people.

I think Peyton is doing her best. She is operating at the highest level that she can. If she has enough cover, that can be pretty good. It hurts if she is the one that has to do all of the scoring, too much pressure. I wonder if tonight doesn't let them see that they can win when Peyton isn't scoring twenty, and Kay Kay isn't on the floor for much of the game. They can relax and do what they do best.

In some ways, this reminds me of the Villarroel teams. Sherri likes to have an organized team. Maddie and T'Ona tend to operate well when everything breaks down. Their athleticism is an advantage. In the last few games that Maria was here, they broke superior teams down and got them into a running war. In that, there was no match for Maria.

Thanks, Syb for the play-by-play. Sounds like it was a real cat fight. Proud of our guys - just hang with them and pounce on opportunities in the late minutes. Great win! Got to get KK to play consistently (good). Maddie starting to emerge.

That last 1:47 really made a difference as to the length of this thread.

Had we not had that 1:47, I have no doubt that we would have several from other boards or forums come on here to tell us how bad we are. I may love Maddie and T'Ona forever just for keeping the peace.
