Or, rather, we're not going to. Pretty sure we won't go higher than 1m. Thoughts?

That's kind of the way I feel. Don't see Joe loosening the pocket book that far. I think Buzz would be a fantastic hire but realistically don't see it happening (sigh).

I agree. Buzz reportedly makes $1.5(ish)mill right now and is the hottest name out there. One would assume that Marquette(or some other school) may contemplate raising his pay to $2mill. I can't see OU paying $2mill.

OU prints money compared to most schools.
No excuse.

There's no way to know what they're going to shell out for a coach. Depends on how sick of losing they are.

if joe wants to go cheap, if whoever he hires winds up being successful, he'll eventually have to pay that coach pretty well. might as well spend the money in the interim.

and if geno is his top choice, hypothetically, how much less would he have to pay geno than buzz? wouldn't imagine there would be that much of a differential in money.

pay buzz.

i agree as well, I don't think we go any higher than 1.3 for starters, Jeff came in and agree or disagree did prove himself in his first few years by making the field in Blake's Frosh year and the Elite Eight in his second year, also we played a great NC team closer than anyone. It wasn't until after this that his salary was bumped up to elite status. Our new coach not only has to rebuild the team he will have to rebuild the salary structure.

Breaking: Jeff Capel Nets a Seven Year Extension
by dishingoutdimes on Apr 3, 2009 9:23 AM CDT in Basketball

This is according to Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis. No details on the contract, but obviously Castiglione locked up Capel long term with a nice contract. I'm imagining we'll hear more later. Here's the short article.

Anyways, good news today, only 2 days after he was rumored to be in the lead for the Arizona job. Good job by Joe Castiglione, and we'll report more later as we learn it.

I hope Joe C spends the basketball funds better next time.

If Capel earned $1.7 million, I don't see any reason why OU wouldn't go at least that high, maybe higher, to get a coach with more experience and a proven track record of success.

If Joe C. chooses to go the cheap route again, as he seems inclined to do, pnkranger's limit of $1 mil may be as much as we should expect. Doing that, however, is a risk he may not want to take this time, unless he thinks his reputation as an AD who usually makes the right call can take another hit.

I completely agree with this well-reasoned rational post. There's no reason that OU can't be competitive with any other college when it comes to salary.
