What's next for Gillispie and Capel?

So, you don't think 5 years is = "given a chance"?

So I'M the one who's always attacking YOU?

For your information, I believe Capel deserves a chance to recover from the mistakes he made last season. He's got nothing to apologize for in regards to his first three years at OU.

I didn't think it was an attack but a question of what you posted. Sorry to offend.

Did anyone listen to the animal today? Gottlieb was on there talking about BCG and he made some good points. He was talking about how he did a good job at aTm but those players were already there and he also mentioned that he tried to run off AC Law. He also mentioned how horrible of a job he did at Kentucky. How he took over for a coach that kept them in the tourney and then he didn't even make it to the tournament with NBA players on his roster and the guy after him is bringing in nothing but nba talent.

I'm not much on Gottlieb's opinion when it comes to OU or coaches who may be a candidate at OU. I think he has an agenda regarding OU so his opinion of anything that could relate to OU should not be requested or taken seriously.

BCG inherited Acie Law, Antoine Wright, Joseph Jones (Watkins recruit), Chris Walker, and Marlon Pompey...Jones/Law was the foundation

As a counter point, he recruited the players who took aTm to the sweet 16 under Turgeon and played the last couple of years.

Josh Carter
Brian Davis
Deandre Jordan
BJ Holmes
Dominique Kirk

He deserves credit for that and for winning with talent that Watkins took 0-16.

Not offended, Booger; expected. By the way, Billy Gillespie is probably one of the last guy's I'd want coaching OU. But I will say this: If BG was hired to coach the Sooners tomorrow, I'd support him and wish him nothing but the best.

So the credit goes to Watkins for starting a recruiting trend? :ez-laugh:

I know they were young, but how on God's green Earth did Watkins go 0-16 with that group?

I have no idea how Watkins was so bad at A&M. He did well at the mid-major level before taking that job, and he's done a lot of good work at Mizzou as our lead assistant.

I can only guess that he somehow lost that team and they quit playing for him. I'm pretty sure that was during a pretty strong stretch for the Big 12, too, so there weren't a lot of opportunities to luck into wins.

Gillispie's overall record is marred by his first season at UTEP in which his team went 6-24. I'm not a UTEP basketball historian or anything, but a simple Google search reveals that Gillispie inherited a UTEP team that had gone 10-22 and 13-15 in two of the three years prior to his arrival. I'm also willing to forgive a 6-24 record when a coach follows it up with 25 wins the next season! At A&M, turned around a team that had gone 60-112 under Melvin Watkins. Under Gillispie, A&M never won fewer than 20 games in a season. Even at Kentucky, Gillispie averaged 20 wins. I'd kill for that right now.

There's a pretty striking contrast between Gillispie and Capel. At UTEP and A&M, Gillispie took terrible programs and turned them into NCAA tournament teams. Capel, on the other hand, took a program that had only missed the NCAA tournament once in 12 years and flushed it down the toilet in five years. Here are Jeff Capel's remarkable accomplishments at OU. He guided the program to its first losing season since 1981 and he's on the verge of guding us to consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1967. Yeah, this guy definitely deserves another year. He's our best long term solution, isn't he? You Capel defenders are pathetic.

Yikes.

Wow! When was the last time OU had less than 5,000 in attendance for a conference game? That could not have escaped the attention of Joe C or anyone else in a position of authority.

Another broken streak? Are you talking years? I have to give the Coach CREDIT when it is deserved. He is consistent when it comes to breaking streaks. At the end of the season, we will find out just how important OU basketball is to Joe, David and Molly. I have a feeling Jeff will get the BBsr treatment.

That's comical.

I certainly don't question your support. If you can support Capel and after 5 years claim he hasn't been given a chance, then you would support anybody.

I'm now confused. You're suggesting if I don't think we should hire Gillespie, I automatically want to retain Capel, signing him to a multi-million, multi-year deal? Not wanting Gillespie is a defense of Capel in some way?

Pathetic, huh? What's pathetic is the know it all's whose experience and arrogance seems to come from YMCA leagues and intramural teams. I'm guessing you fit that mold. Go MS3's!

Pathetic, huh? You'll make a good Doctor.

Not sure what my comments on a sports message board have to do with my capacity to practice medicine, but it's not like your arguments make a ton of sense to begin with.

I made a fact laden argument as to why Capel should be ridden out of here on a rail. Now, you can counter as to why he deserves another season. Feel free to take more potshots as to whether or not I'll make a good physician.

No quite the contrary, I think you'll make a great Physician. I was not being sarcastic.

Again, you are on here calling people pathetic for not wanting to hire Gillespie (again which has nothing to do with supporting or not supporting Capel, it's not one or the other) so I'm guessing you're one of those intramural or YMCA stars, who seem to become experts in their own minds when they bank in the winning shot against the dental students.

It's okay, you lost your train of thought. You thought I was pimping Capel by not wanting to hire Gillespie. There are better options out there if Joe decides to make a move, a move I wouldn't object to. You got a little upset (maybe it's finals week?) and called people pathetic. It happens from time to time. We all get upset sometimes.

If Capel can get this team back to winning next season, then you can expect that trend to continue since he will be returning all 5 starters and most of his bench the following year. If he can't next year than he will be looking for a new job.

I see Joe C giving Capel another year, basically telling him he needs to make the NCAA Tournament. There will be people upset with it, and they have a right to be, but I think that's the move that will be made. (well, lack of a move I guess) It also must be noted I doubt the evaluation process is complete.
