Why is our scoring average a bit low?

You have probably noticed that we are averaging about 72 points per game. That is toward the bottom of the conference teams. At the same time, we are in 3rd place in defensive scoring (last time I checked).

Our offensive production is lower than a typical year. Is it intentional? Is it partly due to the change to the quarters system? Any chance it is because of an emphasis on defense and not scoring quite as much is being used as one tool in that?

Compared to last year, and we are only 1/3 through this season, it is simply percentages. We are averaging 72.0 per game, last year 74.7. 41.8 per cent this year to 43.5 last. Three point 34.1 to 34.8 last year and Free Throws 66.3 this year and 69.7 last year. Missing lay ups and free throws is a big reason we don't have as many points as any thing. However, I do think over all our defense has played extremely well so far and that will help in the win column as the season moves on.

I think we don't have enough girls that are aggressively looking to score.

Our defense has played fairly well. If our rebounding on both ends of the court were better and the free throw shooting were up to par, we would be tough. I think our biggest problem is consistency - we stop moving, Gabby gets the dribbleitus, we lose focus and have a turnover and things go to pot.

When the shots aren't falling, we have no one on the bench to bring in to knock down shots. Kornet would have helped. Missing Gioya hurts.

We have not had a sub who has stepped in regularly to add a punch to our offense.

I'm honestly not sure we have a sub who can do that. We have several excellent starters but need some subs to step up in a better way as we go into conference season.

In looking back at the A&M game, it looked clear that Sherri has told TT to not drive into the lane all the time. She held up several times and passed the ball. I wish she would start to hit those mid-range jumpers. But considering how much she has struggled at the FT line, she may not have enough skill at the mid-range to make it dependable.
