WNBA Draft

Given what she did this year, would you have drafted Aaryn? For what position? There are better shooters who are 6-1. There are a lot of better ball handlers. If you are 5-7, you need to work to take advantage of your talent---get better, overcome your deficiencies.

Yes, I would have drafted Aaryn. Some sportscasters (outside of ESPN) had her being drafted in the 15-19 spot range. There were some shakeups that could have moved her down, but not completely out of draft range, IMO. I don't know of many 6-1 shooters who were better in the third round. Yes, Liston and Hooper I expected to go high. Some of the people drafted I have never heard of prior to the draft itself. Hmm.

The team that drafted CP3 folded. The team Tulsa has moved from Detroit even after winning a few WNBA titles (and then the best players decided not to come here). Their first draft pick in Tulsa, Sooner standout Amanda Thompson, was cut mid-season her rookie year. The team that won the first three WNBA titles in league history (Houston Comets) don't exist anymore.

Perhaps Aaryn chosen not to go to the WNBA. Perhaps she is going to find a more stable employer?

I apologize for knocking the WNBA. I know some of you are fans. I've tried being a fan multiple times and failed. Even beer couldn't make my husband want to attend a game again.

I'm not a WNBA fan either. But, I do like to read about Sooners in the league doing well.

I'm not a fan of the WNBA in person game experience for the same reason I'm not a fan of the NBA. I hate the constant music, movie sound bites and sound effects. The game itself is good.

Indeed. We have had an unlucky string of injuries. That does impact others' likelihood of getting drafted (like Aaryn) because of team rankings. Aaryn has two major weaknesses: relatively poor ball handling skills, and poor on-ball defense. She can shoot the gaps well and get some steals every once in a while, but in the league, you have to be able to defend. Offense isn't as big of a concern for Aaryn, in my opinion. I hope she signs somewhere. She must be devastated. I didn't realistically expect Morgan Hook nor Nicole Griffin to land.

I will probably get banned again for this. But is amazing after 4 years how the people on here don't know what they are talking about. Aaryn was not recruited as a point guard and did not play the point in HS. She was always a 2 guard. Concerning the draft, you should check the names of the players that entered and you will see that Morgan Hook didn't enter. I have heard she decided to stay and get her masters versus entering the draft. Please please do your homework if you are going to post.

I don't know if Aaryn ever played PG in high school or not because I didn't see her play in HS.

Morgan would not have gotten drafted regardless if what she did. Solid player at OU but no chance of making the WNBA.

Nah, I think this is a fair post.

It's hard to not see Aaryn's stats and assume she's a shooting guard and always was. Top scorer, three-baller extraordinaire, etc. Her stealing and occasional assist prowess might make you think she was more a point-shoot hybrid, though.

not a fan of the WNBA

I was really excited when Tulsa got a team. I remembered how much fun OU womens games were in college and thought they could recreate that at a pro, local level. Instead, a mostly empty arena with a blindingly bright strip at about my eye level (we were about 50 rows up) flashing random graphics constantly, with a stadium blaring noise in to mask how quiet we were all being on every play... gah.

If they took every ex-OU star and made a team out of them, I would grin and bear it. However, when you're throwing in Nolan Richardson, Marion Jones, Sheryl Swoopes, and others just because people might have heard of them in the past decade to get some attention, it's as big of a sham as the arena blaring fake noise and bright lights at me for two hours.

It might be different elsewhere. If they trade for D-Rob, I will give them another chance, even if I just let my toddler loose and chase her up and down the arena steps for two hours.

I learn something every day. I didn't realize players entered the draft. It makes sense - I just never knew it. I guess I thought they were automatically entered.

I know a lot more about the WNBA than many, which probably includes you. Her name was listed as a potential draftee on draftsite.com. That's my homework. Do yours before you criticize others. That's ancillary to the point. I said nothing about Aaryn being a point guard! You still need ball handling skills to be a guard in the WNBA, especially at her size. Sit down somewhere.

From the OU side I checked some twitter accounts including AE's and no one has said anything. I am beginning to think more and more there were some serious chemistry problems between Seniors and the rest.

If I were an under classman and I thought that one of my Senior teammates got the shaft I would say something. Plenty of ways to do that today.

Do not think so. I am sure people talked to Aaryn personally. Jaz Hartman made an indirect comment which was retweeted by Nicole Griffin. Kay Kay made an indirect comment. Vegas is buds with Kornet and Little. Vegas does not tweet much and what would she say. Classier to say nothing. I think this team was all close.

I'm absolutely dumbstruck that Aaryn Ellenberg didn't get selected in the draft. There truly must be something going on behind the scenes. If I were a potential player, I would be very hesitant. I wonder what the issues are.

What could be going on behind the scenes? She was consistently picked by the experts to go low in the second round. People doing the draft do not always make the best decisions. Had she been picked, the chances of her sticking were pretty low. I really wanted her to be picked and to make a team and thought she would be picked going by the projections.

I am pretty sure that NO OU player chose not to go to the WNBA this year. Also, the only one who had a chance was Aaryn and I imagine she was devastated not to be drafted, even though she had to have known it would be tough to make a team.

Amanda Thompson was not chosen until the second round of the draft. Had she had the opportunity to be drafted by another team, she might have stuck but I kind of doubt it. CP3's team folded but the players were dispersed to different teams. She went to the Chicago Sky but was cut after only being there a few days. She had been overseas playing. Abi got to stay but do not remember if she played out the year. Anyway, right now the only active player in the WNBA from OU is CP3 and she just signed a one year contract with Tulsa. EDIT to add, of course, D-Rob is playing for the Stars as Sybarite pointed out below.

There is not a formal entry. Now people who are eligible who have not graduated from college in the U.S. but still meet the requirements to be in the WNBA would probably have to let the league know they are interested. Depends upon the situation, I would suppose.

Aaryn played point guard in high school as has already been pointed out with accompanying links.

Tulsa Shock owners have done a very poor job with this team. However, they are lucky to have some loyal fans (not saying a lot of fans) and could turn things around this year with the new coach and the new players. I am hoping not to see a couple of players that have been on the team for three years. Hoping they are cut and that we choose other players that are available or make some wise trades.

The WNBA has always been poorly run. I do not think the NBA really cared about them, but did not want the ABL to work. Hopefully, over time it will get better.

Someone mentioned Sheryl Swoopes and Marion Jones. Marion brought in fans and had enthusiasm. She wasn't a big detriment, it was losing most of the team and then Nolan not being familiar with the league. As for Swoopes, she could have been a bench player for any team and have helped. With the lack of team leadership and experience, Swoopes helped the team imo. Swoopes also brought in fans.
