In terms of talent vs. W-L record, the 2009-2010 team will never be topped for futility. Three top 40 players, two of which were Burger Boys should never result in a losing record. That said, this year has to be one of the most underachieving OU teams I've watched in my 40+ years as a fan.
Here are the only "bad coaching jobs" in my view based on the talent level for that team. Recruiting does not play into the list below. What does seem to be a trend is that in every case, the bad coaching job was in either the last year for that coach or second-to-last year.
1979-1980: Dave Bliss apparently had one foot out the door when the preseason Big 8 favorites couldn't even secure an NIT berth. That was a senior-dominated team with Stotts, Curry and Beal.
1992-1993: Lots of talented and experienced juniors and seniors on this team (Sallier, Webster, Evans and Hamilton), so an NIT berth was inexcusable. Tubbs was burning out, though. His final team was even worse, but there was significantly less talent with only Jeff Webster (and an emerging Ryan Minor) back from the aforementioned list.
2005-2006: Kelvin actually got this team to the Dance (as a badly overrated #6 seed), but with the Bookout / Gray / Everett senior trio (the three best players on the previous year's team), this should not have been a team which scored 38 points in a game against Texas or lost to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in an NCAA Tournament game which wasn't even that close.
2009-2010: I'm not sure I've ever seen a worse coaching job at a Big 8 / Big XII school. Capel's last team was just as bad, but with far less talent.
2016-2017: I hope this is premature since there is still a month left in the season. However, I'm still seeing November mistakes being made in February...not a good sign.
