Wow

Griner wasn't a bad athlete, and she did learn to pass and shoot free throws. But, I doubt that we would have heard her name if she had been 6-1. She might have started somewhere, but she wouldn't have been all that noticeable. A 6-1 forward who isn't that good of a rebounder at 6-8 isn't likely to have caused much of a stir.

I knew people look at me sideways but IMO she needs to improve her game to play well at the next level. She's not going to be that much bigger and stronger than they are and no one will be intimidated by her. Opposing coaches will be able to game plan for her and she isn't going to be the baddest on the block anymore.

And her size did have a lot to do with it. Had she been the size of the sisters from Stanford they would have eaten her up.

I tend to agree with this. Indeed, if I had the first draft choice, it would be Del Donne. I think her skills translate well to the pros. I think Griner will have some difficulty with players who are almost as tall and quite a bit stronger and often more athletic. Both may be double-teamed, but I think Del Donne is more accustomed to it. I like what she brings to a team that probably already exists as opposed to just pure height.

Lets face it. Louisville got hot shooting the 3's. Then it hit a wall against UCONN.

UConn was pretty hot from the 3 point line last night. They hit 13/26 3s against Louisville. Louisville hit only 5/23 3s.

Against Baylor, Louisville hit 16/25 3s. Baylor hit 6/17 3s.

I could see that. Is it a lock that Chicago - right? - will take Griner first? Del Donne has that ability that they look for in men and women which is the ability to create her own shot and score on her own. I think she will excel at the next level. Griner needs the others around her more. Of course you never know. She may prove us all wrong.

I have said on various occasions I do not think Kim always used Griner in ways that maximized Griner's ginormous ability. It is likely her next coach will. If so, I believe she will be a better player in the pros than she was in college. Give her 2-3 years and the sky's the limit.

Griner improved in college. I just don't know that she can improve on what the pros will require. She would probably need weight. She can do what she needs to do defensively, but I don't know about rebounding and offense. For someone 6-8, she has always been a rather poor rebounder. Weight? Determination?

I also don't know that she has the foot speed to get to the rim against the pros. She can shoot from five to eight feet, and they won't be able to double-team her there like they did in college. She can get the ball, and she can hit jump shots. I don't know if she will stretch her range or find a way to get to the rim from those eight feet.

I think I would take her for defense alone and accept her offense as being pretty good.

Del Donne can open up any defense. She is such a scoring threat that she will force them to cover her wherever she is, and that opens up the floor. Grtiner can't open up the floor like that. Scoring is still how you win, and not many are recruited for defense.

It would be a nice choice to have.

Phoenix has the number 1 WNBA pick. They had a bad season mainly due to injuries I believe to Taurasi....

"injuries". They tanked last season in hopes of winning the lottery and getting the #1 pick in Griner. I believe Taurasi missed most of the games for various reasons and "injuries". Penny Taylor missed all season due to a torn ACL.

They will have plenty of talent this year. Dewanna Bonner, Taurasi, Taylor, Candice Dupree, and (likely) Brittney Griner.

There is speculation that the team threw the season but we can't really prove that. It is probably true but doesn't really matter. They still have the number one pick....
