Interesting to compare.

Likely starting 5:

2008-09 vs 2015-16

PG Austin Johnson SR vs Jordan Woodard JR
G Willie Warren III FR vs Isaiah Cousins SR
G Tony Crocker JR vs Buddy Hield SR
F Taylor Griffin SR vs Ryan Spangler SR
F Blake Griffin SO vs Khadeem Lattin SO

Bench

PG Omar Leary SR PG Dinjiyl Walker SR
G Cade Davis SO G Rashard Odomes FR

F Juan Pattillo JR C Akolda Manyang JR
F Ryan Wright JR F Jamuni McNeace FR
F Kyle Cannon SO
C Orlando Allen SO

Coaching

Jeff Capel Lon Kruger
Betts et al Henson, Hill, Crutchfield et al

The 08-09 team made it to the Elite 8 and was dominant at times in winning the pre-season NIT tournament and flirting with perfection before Blake got hurt and reaching a #1 ranking in the polls.

How would you compare the two teams? Individual match ups? Bench? Coaching?

Just stylistically, this OU team would run the 08-09 team out of the gym. Pattillo was only a factor in games from the second half of conference play onward, and you can't play three bigs in rotation and not have those bodies gassed.

Blake would HURT Khadeem one-on-one so I imagine the defensive assignment would go to Spangs. He would at least hassle Blake into some heat-of-the-moment mistakes. Taylor vs. Khadeem is a run/jump athlete matchup; Taylor had more savvy as a senior than Khadeem does now, but he was less suited to help-side D.

Willie could light it UP when he was on, and his first step could tie up Isaiah on some possessions. But I'm not sure he'd win the matchup if Isaiah hit a few threes and made him play honest on the defensive end. Buddy would probably take a few turns, and if Crocker hit a few shots Isaiah would probably get a switch on him. I doubt highly that Tony would have a Syracuse-Sweet 16-esque field day against our current wings though. No way that Crock could answer a Buddy Love run, though. The Griffins would have to volleyball spike Buddy into the parquet to keep him off the scoreboard if he didn't settle for ugly threes.

The key is the point guard matchup. AJ was third in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio in 08-09, so Jordan would have to bulldog him over the time line to exert effective pressure. At that point, AJ's ankle was ground beef so if he could shake man pressure at halfcourt he'd have an impact. If not, and as was the case with Ty Lawson and UNC... it's not pretty. Jordan at times plays like the poor man's Ty Lawson, so if he killed it, AJ might not help very much.

Depth is this current team's biggest advantage. Sight unseen, I trust Rashard Odomes to impact both ends of the floor more than Cade Davis - who was basically a shooting specialist in that season - and definitely Christian James more than The Immortal Ray Willis. Dinjyl has size on Omar Leary and could body him defensively in the 1b-1b matchup. They're both lefties so no balance/swipe advantage there. Pattillo played a similar role to what we presume Manyang will -- a shot-blocker on D, and tip dunker on offense. But he was 6'6! Maybe on guile Pattillo owns a slight advantage. Not on measurables. Ryan Wright (on a good day) could eat Buford's lunch inside of 18 feet, but how many good days did Ryan Wright have? That's a wash, more than likely.

Big O was worthless; at least J-Money can play some clean up minutes. Didn't Kyle Cannon get bounced from the team midseason? At least Chris Early had the decency not to goose expectations when he got axed.

I'd expect the points to go:
B. Griffin: 23
W. Warren: 16
T. Griffin: 12
T. Crocker: 9
A. Johnson: 8 (w/ 6 ast)
J. Pattillo: 6 (2 blk, 8 reb)
C. Davis: 6
O. Leary: 2
R. Wright: 2
R. Willis: DNP
O. Allen: DNP
K. Cannon: DNP (SUSP)

B. Heild: 18
I. Cousins: 15
R. Spangler: 14
J. Woodard: 14 (w/ 5 ast, 3-7 FT)
C. James: 10
R. Odomes: 8 (2 3-pointers)
A. Manyang: 6 (3 blk, 4 OReb)
D. Buford: 6
D. Walker:4
J. McNeace: DNP
C. Cole: DNP
B. Alade: DNP

84-95, Kruger Sooners

I'll wait until we get into the season to start with this business. Way too early.

I liked Cade Davis, so I think its hard to say an incoming guy is better.

Think its two totally different teams when its Blake vs Buddy

There is no way Krugers team beats 08-09 Sooners. The only way is if Blake gets hurts.

lol at anyone choosing cousins over freshman WW. isn't even close

Choosing senior year version of cousins vs freshman WW isnt close??

I'll have what you're having...

You are vastly underestimating Blake Griffin, that type of player is a complete game changer if these two squads matched.

Spangs is not checking Blake, he would go for 35 and 20.

I would probably choose Cousins but WW wasn't bad as a freshman. He scored almost 15 ppg and would have likely been a 1st round NBA pick if he would have come out that year. Isaiah is a better defender and rebounder.

I agree that Blake is a game changer but I think Kruger's team would be the better defensive team. I might pick the better defensive team if I had to bet on a game and the offense wasn't really mismatched.

Kruger coaching both squads, I would take Blake's team.

I will be ECSTATIC if Cousins senior year is as good as Willie Warren's freshman year. I think a lot of people have short memories. Some pundits were literally touting Warren as a candidate for National POY as a sophomore based on what he did as a freshman. It may not have worked out that way, but the fact he was in the preseason discussion says a lot about what he accomplished as a freshman.

Ya i know .. that's not an indictment of WW. He was a good player with a lot of hype. That poster that said there was no comparison is a goober. Cousins had 3 less points and double the rebounds. Very comparable.

I'd rather have Cousins and it's certainly not preposterous

That's all true, but don't you think he benefited greatly by playing with Blake as a freshman? Let a senior Isaiah play with a sophomore Blake, and I suspect he'd benefit from it, too.

Good points, Skyvue...but if Isiah Cousins improves his PPG by 3 and his APG by 1, while also significantly improving his free throw %, I promise not to complain. Cousins was much better hitting his 3's, but much worse hitting his 2's. Their SPG was pretty close, but Cousins has the overall defensive edge.

Stats don't tell everything. WW was a game changer that could take over games and fill the stat sheet. Cousins isn't that kind of player

I think Hield to Warren is the better comparison, even though Warren was a bit better ball handler (although still not good enough to man the point).

Cousins is similar to AJ.
