I see the upcoming season as being much more to Sherri's strength and liking than this past season. Sherri is first a teacher. This year, I think her students are a bit more likely to be receptive.

I had the feeling that we were trying to force some veterans to perform as we would have them perform rather than the way they naturally performed. In previous years, we had had seniors who finally took the reins. This past year, I think each was somewhat limited in capability, whether by athleticism or personality, and they just didn't relish having the reins. It led to a runaway program that had no real direction, especially at crunch time. We lost the games that we usually win.

I don't know that we have those limitations this year. We haven't seen players settle into a type as yet. We have a lot of undeveloped pieces, and it is up to each of them and their coaching to see how each will develop. Last year, Sherri let veterans remain on the floor when they obviously were not really doing their jobs because it is what she had. She, and they, were disappointed. This year, I expect the leash to be somewhat shorter. Learn, or we will have someone else with the same level of experience, almost none, who might relish the opportunity.

Sherri does like Kaylon, and I suspect that she will be given every opportunity. She likes Gioya and Sharane. I suspect that each will get the opportunity to hold their positions. But, I suspect that they will be required to perform, or they will find Vionese, McKenna, Shaya, and others with the opportunity to demonstrate that they will learn and perform. Until she announced her departure, I had more faith in Felisha than I had in Kaylon, and that is what Kaylon must overcome, her lack of performance thus far.

I suspect that we will begin with fourteen players having the opportunity to show that they want to play. By January, I suspect that we will have that down to about ten. By the end of February, I anticipate that we will have no more than eight in a regular rotation, but they will be eight who will be aggressive and fight for their positions on the floor.

By the end of March, I suspect that none of this past year's starters would be able to make the starting five. If I had to wager on who I think will start in April, I might go:

Gabi Ortiz
Maddie Manning
Peyton Little
Sharane Campbell

Nicole Kornet
Kaylon Williams
Vionese Pierre-Louis
Gileysa Penzo
McKenna Treece

Shaya Kellogg

Gioya Carter
LaNeisa Williams
Derica Wyatt
T'Ona Edwards

I think the first four are probable starters. The next five will be battling for positions. I think Shaya stands alone due to rebounding strength and few errors and will be a regularly-used reserve. I see the last four as fighting to see who will emerge. I don't anticipate that more than one of the last four will see much time.

It is time for everyone to become aggressive and show that you want to be in the game when it is tied with a minute left.

I have always thought that KayKay was very talented, but she hasnt performed as well as she should have in my opinion. I would put her performance at about 65-%. When she focuses it shows and she is unstoppable. Sherri needs to really get her attention.

---or a nice seat on the bench.

If this turns out to be the pecking order than last years recruiting class was a complete bust with none, except a transfer (not recruited), even making the top 10. Thats about 3 classes in a row being well below even average.

I am not sure that is accurate.... I like Gioya and Shaya. I also think T'ona can be a good role player if not more. Maddie and Nicole were both good players too.... Every team needs role players and some of these may be just that but I have a feeling they will surprise some...especially Gioya and Shaya.

I am not sure it is either. Just going by his rankings. I do not judge any freshman until I see them against real good D1 competition. I do agree with Syb in that no freshman last year really stood out. Some change the next year some do not.

You won't beat anyone good with those 2 in the lineup. Good defined as top 10.

Carter is a really good player not great yet still early, but good. I think she would have a good chance to start if it wasn't for Manning and Little being on the Wings, she's also limited to the positions she can play, more of a 2/3 maybe she can get minutes at the 4 this year.

Do you think Manning is going to be sufficiently recovered from her injuries to be effective?

Maddie said something the other day that sounded like she will be completely released tomorrow. I hope that means she is 100% healthy.

She will be very effective in the scheme of things, how well her knees respond we will have to see. Just gut feeling, I think she will be a star!!!!

Bigd,
the knee jerk reaction concern with Gioya and Ton'a is that they don't have the outside shot to play the 2. Little or Kornet take over that role.
they don't have the height for an (already short roster playing 4 guard/wings) to play the 3 defensively). That's Campbell/Manning/Kornet
that Ortiz is going to relegate them to the bench by seizing the 1/PG spot.
And Lanesia/Penzo is going to better at the change of pace super athletic combo role.
Wyatt at least has a clear role in 3 point shooter off the bench.

Gibbs is transferring, and despite a huge need for forward play Kellogg could barely get off the bench as well last year. I'm hoping Kellogg takes a big leap forward.

If Vivi is able to play this year, Kaylon/Treece/Vivi could easily eat up all the minutes at 4/5.

I expect Sherri will go with a 4 guard lineup which will likely limit Shaya's minutes to close to what she got this year.

As Atlanta said, Edwards and Carter need to develop outside shots if they want to contend for minutes.

We saw the freshmen as freshmen. They might improve.

Carter could get where she wanted to go. She could get her shot off, and, at times, it seemed that she was the only one who was willing to try. What happens if she develops a three or becomes more accurate on her short jumper?

T'Ona demonstrated that she can get inside. She is too short to do much, but she actually made some layups. She needs to develop some sort of shot to get floor time. Since she can handle the ball and play defense, it would be huge if she could develop a three or a pull up twenty footer.

Kellogg just needs floor time. She made fewer mistakes than our experienced players. She lacks confidence thus far, but she should be effective if she just gets her confidence. She rebounds.

Derica seemed to lose confidence as the year went along. She is a good shooter from everywhere, and she has a nose for the ball. She just lost what confidence she had. Teams actually did guard her at the three point line.

At least one of these should develop enough over the summer to be a part of the rotation. I suspect that two will.

If Maddie and Peyton can take the pressure off the others with some playmaking skills, the team chemistry can take a major step forward. We really didn't have a playmaker last year.

Right on. And these freshmen were playing on a team that underachieved for some reason, lost games they shouldn't have, and were not able to get better as the year went on. All things that hinder the development of young players. I expect big improvement on a couple of those freshmen, as well as Kornet. That improvement should occur over the summer, fall practice, and the early games.

I agree

Sherri has shown a preference for 4 guards in the last few years. Perhaps that is because she thinks that gives her the best chance to win or perhaps it's because she hasn't been able to recruit an effective PF.

Shaya isn't a guard and has not shown the ability to shoot from the outside. She hasn't shown the ability to create her own shot and her rebounding has not set her apart from other players. We'll see if she can improve over the summer.
