2024-25 Schedule News

That’s right, Lon was so “lucky” that he recruited, signed, and helped develop Buddy into the best player in the county. Pure good luck there. Or maybe Buddy was considered the best player in the nation when he was in high school? Someone will have to remind me. Either way, total luck on Lon’s part.
To be fair...any coach in the country would have "Developed" Buddy. With his work ethic he basically developed himself.

Lon did a great job developing guards, including multiple All-ACC guards like McGusty and Williams. He also did a great job with Trae Young to lead OU to an 8-10 conference record.

I strongly suspect that Buddy would disagree with your statement.

As the developer of Blake Griffin, Jeff Capel would also disagree with that statement.

As somebody who recruited him heavily, Bill Self (Wichita's idol) would actually agree with the statement. I suspect he would have been just fine at KU.

Of course Buddy would disagree. He loves Lon. And this isn't a knock on Lon, I loved Lon too. This is a testament to Buddy. The fact is that Buddy was a workhorse who was driven more than most to be great. He would have grown and been successful anywhere he went.

11/16 - OU vs Stetson per Bart Torvik
That should round out the schedule. They are another team that will be a NET 300, so 7 of the 8 noncon games that we had control over are NET 300s. And if not for the fact that our SEC/ACC challenge game is in Norman, it would mean that every noncon home game is against NET 300 teams. And yet Moser will probably go around begging for fan support.

I'll say it again -- we better beat Providence. If we don't, even the B4A won't give us much of a schedule bump. This is a disgraceful schedule.

I don’t see how there’s any arguing with this.

And not to mention the conference schedule is weaker too. You would think the coaching staff would want to have a little tougher noncon to offset that.

We moved back to the area 4 years ago. For the last 3 years we have had season tickets in the donor area. We made the decision this year to NOT purchase tickets. The pathetic HOME OOC schedule is one of the reasons we chose not to reup. Moser has to get that….right?!

Don’t blame you at all. I don’t know how they can even attempt to market this schedule to the fans. They probably won’t get more than a couple thousand people in the LNC until conference play starts, and if they don’t do well in Atlantis and against OSU and/or Michigan, people may not even show up for conference games.

You should email Joe C or whoever else you can reach in the athletic department to let them know about your decision. I haven’t had tickets in a while since I live about 185 miles from campus and making the drive to and from games on week nights isn’t as easy as it was when I was in my 20s, but even if I lived closer, I’d be anything but enthused to watch seven of the worst 30 or so teams in America. It’s an absolute slap in the face to fans and shows that Moser has no confidence in his ability to beat teams with a pulse.

Realistically, everybody knows this is Moser’s last year. His hope is to have a winning enough schedule to get outta Norman. And if he doesn’t then he’ll be fired anyways. It’s so sad that this is the state of OU basketball.

You buy szn passes for ooc games?

I’d guess prue guess… 80% teams play awful non cons. And then to cancel on top of joining the sec? Seems like just wanted to give them up…. And that’s ok.

Here is a breakdown of the schedule since Kruger to Moser. Including a look at opponents in the "exciting 1-50" category, "decent 50-150" category, "150-300 meh, don't care" category, and the "ew 300+" category.

We can further concatenate this by just saying 1-150 are "good teams" and 150+ are "bad teams" and see how they compare as well. (If you dont like that, fine too, can ignore, I just wanted to see a simpler look at it all. Of course we all know it is way more nuanced than that.)

Again, this is END OF SEASON results based off KenPom rank, not pre-season predicted ranks.

Also a fun look, take out Kruger's 2 "rare" tough schedule seasons (2019,2020-2021 covid season was also an outlier), and you get average SOSs that look like this:

KrugerMoser
OOC SOS146.75202
SOS1818.67

(I say all of this, to also point out I would prefer subbing a few 300s for 150-200 games, but we may hyperbole a bit with how awful the schedules may be perceived)

If you read my post carefully it was ONE of the reasons we opted to pass on them. None having to be financial. Bottom line with the total lack of support with the fandom for our bball program we can pick and chose the games we want to see and purchase them the day of that game.

If that is a real reason for why you didn’t renew, you should let the AD know if you haven’t already

Good analysis. I'm kind of surprised PM hasn't gone back to a tougher nonconf for this year but he knows he needs the wins.
1st year they had a weak nonconf, had a decent conf season and got left out.

Next year they ramp up the nonconf sos and have a decent nonconf performance but a bad conf performance.

So last year they prob thought they could back off the nonconf again to get more wins but kind of shitty luck that some teams they thought would be good last year weren't. Had a great nonconf performance and a decent conf performance and still got left out.

I think

So what I see is that for a decade, we never played more than two games against 300+ teams. In four years under Moser, it’s gone 3, 3, 4, and now it’ll be 7. And the gap between 147 and 202 is a big one.

The thing I just don’t understand is regardless of how an individual coach prefers to schedule, we KNOW, for a fact, what the committee looks at. Even if a coach doesn’t agree with the committee’s philosophy, if your goal is to give yourself the best chance of making the tournament, you need to adjust the approach. Instead, he has doubled down on a losing philosophy.

If Michigan, OSU, and Georgia Tech don’t have really good seasons, and/or if we lose to Providence and have to settle for Davidson in our next game in the Bahamas, this schedule will somehow look even worse.

I don’t have any sources on this. But I think our lack of attendance is hurting who they can bring to Norman. Schools expect a payout to play a non con road game. The only time in last few years we brought in an out of conference power team is the challenges. All our other games are neutral sight or tournaments. So OU has to get home games for season ticket holders. So question comes, what comes first, attendance or getting better teams to Norman? Do we loose money operating a game, including payout to other team, just to have better competition? I don’t know the answer. But I will be at all the home games.

This is something that I have been curious about as well. Have the increased expenses associated with NIL, etc., caused spending cuts in areas like the non-con schedule?

If not, then what are we doing with this schedule?
