2025-26 Season

OU has a REPUTATION for being overly secret about injuries. It started with Bob Stoops and has likely spread to other sports. The reputation is so bad that when WR Lewis ran into a brick wall a few weeks back, the announcers said something like this about an hour later. I'm paraphrasing, but you get the point. "We're trying to find out any information we can get on Keontrez Lewis to pass along, but the University of Oklahoma is not noted for being transparent when it comes to injuries". I'm trying to remember if I ever heard announcers say this about any other university.
ok?

I'll never understand why fans get hung up on knowing details of injuries.

I understand it more now due to the pay to play scheme...but still, who really cares?
If you like the coach, it doesn't bother you. If you dislike the coach, you will use it as another arrow in the quiver.

Its a nothing burger

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but it bothers me because I think it just shows how self-important so many college coaches are. They act like they are protecting the nuclear code. And I don't care whether I like the coach or not, it is always annoying. I respect the hell out of what Bill Snyder did at KSU but he was the king of the paranoid, control-freak coaches.

maybe, just maybe they are thinking of the players and their privacy...what jackasses

Yes because players would have their lives uprooted if we knew that a "lower body injury" was to, say, their knee as opposed to their ankle.
Again, why do you care? Literally how does it effect you as a fan to know it is a knee vs an ankle?

I expect the secrecy to start to go away as we continue on the pay for play road. But historically, it is perfectly reasonable for coaches not to delve into injury specifics...especially keeping their future aspirations of professional play in mind

Pro teams know the details anyway, or will find them out before they even consider drafting or signing a player. So the secrecy doesn't in any way help the players in that way.

And until the NCAA mandates injuries be disclosed, the players have the right to keep it secret if they want to.

Again, how does it affect you as a fan?

I listened to the SEC preview episode of a national pod this morning. Most of the discussion was about the top tier teams but one of the hosts discussed the full conference and he has us around 8th. He has a similar view of our roster as the guy from The Athletic: really likes our starting five but not a fan of our depth/bench.

That’s pretty much where I am, too. I know a lot of the people on the board are really high on our depth, but I think each bench guy (with the possible exception of Dayton) has major question marks. Rogers is a freshman big and will undoubtedly have massive ups and downs, and I don’t know how much offense he will provide. JN has never played a D1 game and is coming off a major injury, so I’d expect inconsistency there, too. Atak is obviously a massive question mark defensively and with his lack of strength. And who knows if you’ll get anything from Jones. I think they will all have good moments and there will be some of the bad noncon games where they look great and people will get very excited. But I also think there will be plenty of nights in conference play where our bench combines for single digits and we have to rely almost exclusively on the starters to carry the load.

I just think it’s interesting to hear the perspective of some knowledgeable national guys to get a feel for how neutral folks view the roster.

I think our bench should be more productive than last year's. Soph Dayton > Freshman Dayton, Nwankwo should be able to at least duplicate Taylor's production, Kai Rogers > Godwin..simply due to his shot blocking ability and overall post defense. Jones is the wildcard to me. IF he comes back from this injury and is healthy...he's basically a guy who was penciled in to start last year, coming off the bench to provide quality minutes. He's a very good defender, and is a career 37% shooter from deep. I would assume Atak will end up being situational guy who can come off the bench and provide some shooting here and there.

Interesting that he thinks fairly highly of our team despite not thinking all that highly of Davis and Reid. And he has several guys ahead of Davis in his defensive ratings, which is not at all consistent with what Moser thinks.

I really like EvanMiya and think the team ratings are a great tool, but I expect the individual performances by our players will look a lot different than his projection. If neither Davis nor Reid is among our five best players, it will be a long season, but I don't expect that to happen.

Quantifying overall individual defensive impact/ability is the most difficult thing to do from a basketball analytics standpoint, imo.

Davis is better defensively than any of the numbers say he is. Had some to do with ND’s defensive style, some to do with what he was asked to do individually, some to do with the players around him.

I like Miyakawa as well and think he adds a lot of valuable information, but you can’t scout a player or team solely on a spreadsheet no matter how many new adjustments you make or how hard you try.

Is this the earliest start to the season ever? It feels weird to be starting this early. I kinda miss the Thanksgiving start to the season.

Hope this team reaches its potential. It could be a really good season, if so.
