Christian Heritage 60 Chouteau 32
Christian Heritage players know they’re wearing a target, but they didn’t look like a team hampered by the pressure of being an undefeated defending state champion.
Class 2A’s top-ranked Crusaders shook off a rough third quarter with a strong finish, pulling away for a 60-32 win over Chouteau in the first round of the girls state basketball tournament at State Fair Arena.
“We’re not playing with any pressure,” CHA junior Olivia Curtis said. “Yeah, there’s pressure from people, but we’re just playing our game. We know that whatever happens is what’s supposed to happen.
Curtis had 22 points, 15 rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals as the Crusaders improved to 28-0 on the season. Lexie Davis added 15 points and Myka Parrish had 10, while Rylee Langerman had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Last year, CHA had gained little respect through the season and came into the state tournament as a significant underdog. The role is quite different this time around.
“Last year, nobody really knew who we were,” Curtis said. “It was a tough road, but this year is a little more difficult, because everyone knows our weaknesses and everyone knows our strengths. So we have a target on our back, but it’s still fun.”
Chouteau (21-8), which was making its first-ever state tournament appearance, was led by Brittany Maxwell with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Fairview 46 Mounds 39
The tension started to rise on the Fairview side of State Fair Arena midway through the fourth quarter on Thursday afternoon.
But with a couple of layups and a few free throws, a one-possession game quickly became a double-digit lead and Fairview closed the door on Mounds’ rally with a 46-39 victory in the first round of the Class 2A girls state basketball tournament.
Fairview led 21-10 at halftime and kept the lead at 10 or more for much of the second half, until Mounds put together a rally that cut the Jackets’ lead to 36-33 with just under three minutes to play.
Maddie Mason finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Fairview. Christina Pembrook added eight points, while Lexi Reihm had seven points and nine rebounds.
Fairview (26-3) will face undefeated defending champion Christian Heritage at 10:30 a.m. in Friday’s semifinals at the Big House.
“Defense has been our trademark,” Fairview coach Mike Barton said. “Christian Heritage has great athletes, and we’ll definitely have to bring our ‘A’ game tomorrow. This time of year, you’ve just got to show up, work hard and see what happens.”

Cashion 52, Vanoss 47
No. 2 Cashion, behind 20 points from Sydney Manning and 14 points from Presley Payahsape, overcame a 20-4 deficit to beat No. 9 Vanoss, 52-47, in a girls 2A quarterfinal game at State Fair Arena on Thursday night.
The Lady Wildcats (27-2) play the winner of the game to follow between Kiefer and Howe.
Manning didn’t shoot particularly well (5 of 18), but her 3-pointer with 4:50 left gave Cashion its first lead of the game. Laramie Doffin scored 14 points and Emrie Ellis had 13 points and four blocks for Vanoss (25-7).

Howe 65 Kiefer 53
Howe’s game plan going into Thursday night’s 2A quarterfinal against undefeated Kiefer was to hang in there early and hit some shots.
The Lady Lions did just that and put the clamps on Kiefer’s prolific offense.
Jalei Oglesby scored a game-high 30 points and Kennedi Cooper made four of the team’s nine three-pointers to lead Howe past No. 5 Kiefer, 65-53, at State Fair Arena.
No. 4 Howe (25-6) will face Cashion in a semifinal game Friday.
“It feels good to get that first win,” Oglesby said. “I’ve been here, this is my third time in this first round and we’ve lost every time.”
Kiefer (26-1) hadn’t been in many close games, winning by an average of 31 points. Howe had, and it showed after halftime.
“Being undefeated, we felt like the pressure would be on them,” said Howe coach Chris Brown. “We’ve been in lots of tough games, lots of battles.”
Makayla Melton scored 22 points for Kiefer, which connected on just five of 18 three-point shots. Lauren Ramey added 12 points for the Lady Trojans.
