I just got around to watching the subject so SIAP but it was a great documentary.

That was I believe the first year the NCAA added the 3 point line. However, I noticed in the highlights of the first two rounds of NC states tourney games, the three point line was not on the court but during the remaining games it was....was it just optional to have 3 point line back then?

It was a conference thing. The Big 8 did not allow the 3 point line but the ACC and a few other conferences used it for conference play only. Some conferences had different measurements for their 3 point line. So during the tourney a 3 point shot did not exist.

The next season it became a college rule for all teams with a standard distance.

Actually, the three-pointer didn't become universal in college basketball until the fall of 1986. I saw the very-first game that OU played under the new rule - preseason NIT vs. BYU. OU won that one, 119-110. Tim McCalister went for 44 that night, but he took a ton of shots.

The three-point line in the ACC back in '82-83 was shorter than the top of the circle. I thought it was a joke.

The NC State grad assistant, who was also on that "Survive and Advance" show, was Max Perry. He played one year at OU and left the team just before the '78-79 season. He was a slick passer but couldn't shoot nearly as well as his classmate, Raymond Whitley, at the point.

Interesting...thanks guys.

It's crazy that they allowed a three point line by conference.
