When is the last time OU gave up 59 points in a half?

File that under "things that should never happen in this era of basketball".

Bump.

I'd really like to know. Seems like it would have probably been back in Tubbs' days.

2001.

In Ames.

That team started out 1-3 in the Big 12 and required the gift of all gifts in Manhattan to avoid a season in freefall.

It may have happened in between, but I remembered that game vividly for some reason. I imagine Kelvin burned the tape.

It was the first game I checked.

Another one I checked was the 2002 game in Lubbock. Tech scored 52 points on us in the second half. It was a tour-de-force for the motion offense.

Refresh my memory on that game...for some reason the only miracle finish I can remember in Manhattan was the game in 05 when Lavender hit the improbably layup at the buzzer.

We also got Pittsnogle'd in December 2005 to the tune of 51 second half points by West Virginia.

Coached by John Beilein, btw.

Refresher

J. R. Raymond (remember him?) bailed out critical free throw misses by a young Johnnie Gilbert.

I remember that game everytime I think of Iowa St in Ames. At the time I didn't believe a Sampson coached team could give up that many points in a game. It was our first conference game that year and all I could think was we were headed for disaster. We ended up beating Texas 3 times that year including the conf tourny champ game.

The next year .....well...

That was the season before the Final Four year, correct?

Ahh, and the loss to Indiana State in the Dance was that year.

If i remember correctly, that was a game where OU was down late, but Hollis stole in an inbounds pass and converted in the final seconds to win the game. It may have not been in the final seconds, but I do remember it was inside the final minute. It wasn't on TV, so I had to try and decipher what was happening on the floor from Bob Barry Sr's play call....ugh.

Correct. We were down 26-8 late in the first half of the title game. That's not a typo.

Correct. The Indiana State game, as far as I'm concerned, was the worst loss of the Sampson era. Blowing the big lead, getting Hollis injured in OT. Just awful.

No telling what BBSr said on the radio. We had it on TV in the Wilkinson house. There's an old post-game article I linked up above. We didn't win it, K-State lost it. An epic choke job deluxe.

Wasn't that also the year Sampson dismissed JR Raymond right before the Big XII Tournament? That was a big hit to that team.

Kicked him off the bus, which was departing for the airport and a national TV game against Maryland the next afternoon.

My favorite part about this tread is that it backfired in WT's face. Turns out we gave up 59 points in a half under one the best defensive basketball coaches in the game...with a few players who eventually went to a Final Four. I guess it can happen, WT.

That was a huge blow to that team. He was a good three point shooter. Unfortunately, he did something stupid and had to be kicked off the team. I wonder if OU could have beaten Indiana with Raymond?

Nothing backfired at all. I certainly didn't remember it happening under Kelvin, but I certainly would not have bet a large sum of money that it didn't.

I just wanted to know. That is a sh*t ton of points to give up in one half. Regardless of who the coach is.

So I recorded the game on DVR and watched the first half last night.

For some reason I'm hesitant to even watch the rest...
