Aggies Expected to Hire Kennedy as Basketball Coach

no offense at all intended to Kennedy, but this HAS to be considered a very major setback to ATM's success.

replacing Anderson and Turgeon with Haith and Kennedy on the face of it seems to take the league a step back. however, adding Kruger and Gillespie may balance it some.

I don't know anything about him, but I would expect A&M to still be solid. I doubt he'll be winning any conference titles or anything (not like they're used to that), but I don't think he'll be Melvin Watkins, either.

I don't think Mizzou will really take a huge step back with Haith, either. Chances are he won't win 31 games like Anderson did two years ago, but I think he'll have no trouble winning at the level Anderson did the last two seasons (or what Quin did at his peak). He'll keep us competitive by bringing in quality players. Now that he has a real basketball program to work with, I think he'll prove he's at least a decent coach.

Interesting fact: Kennedy spent one season as an assistant under Haith at Miami.

sawyer, if mu struggles a bit next year with the transition to a new system (not a disaster, just a slight disappointment, say just missing the tourney), and then struggles again the next year with tons of new players replacing all of the seniors, will the fans turn on haith or will they give him a chance to rebuild?

He won't get a chance if he misses the tournament in his first two seasons.

I don't see that happening, though. Next year's team returns basically everyone from a solid team. Mizzou was awful down the stretch last year and looked like a completely different team than it had been, and Anderson seemed completely unfocused as a coach... and now we know why.

Haith may actually be a better fit for most of Mizzou's best players. Ratliffe, English and Pressey will all benefit from a more traditional style IMO (Pressey, as athletic as he is, is really not a point guard who likes to push the tempo). A lot of people wonder how the team will adjust to playing a different style, but really, they weren't all that suited to play Anderson's way, either.

He did a good job building Murray State into a good program. I think this might not be that bad a hire, especially with the talent A&M has coming in. He's a step down from Turgeon but just about anyone A&M could reasonably get was a step down from Turgeon.

I thought they were going to get Roy Williams from UNC?

I probably missed something. Why was anderson unfocused as a coach last year?

Range of Mizzou homer emotions:

1)OMG we lost Mike Anderson
2)OMG we're getting Matt Painter
3)OMG Frank Haith? Our program is dead
4)I'm starting to like Haith
5)Anderson wasn't that good anyway, Haith is better for us

I'm not sure Kennedy is necessarily a "step down" from Turgeon, whose hiring at A&M didn't make much of a splash at that time. Turgeon turned out to be a very good coach, and I suspect Kennedy will too. The guy did quite well at Murray State, and it will be a heck of a lot easier for him to recruit at A&M.

Because Arkansas boosters had been reaching out to him to determine what kind of interest he'd have in their job if they were to let Pelphrey go.

1-4 are fair, but 5 is not exactly a commonly held position. Mizzou fans were definitely not happy with Anderson during the last stretch of the season. He did a pretty poor job closing out last year. At this point most people are simply excited to have a coach who seems to care about recruiting. Anderson let four top 50 recruits leave Missouri this year.
