When does this man enroll? I think he is the key to the season.

All guys are scheduled to be here for Summer school.

Not sure but I agree with you. Last year's team lacked a defensive post presence. AK should provide that.

A funny story - I work out at the same gym as Taj Gray in the South Houston area. We were talking OU hoops and he asked about the incoming guys for next year. I told him about AK and his JUCO ranking and how he was a cousin of Longar Longar. Taj looked at me funny and said "how many freakin cousins does Longar have!"

Just take last seasons team and add multiple above the rim guys. AK hopefully earns starter like minutes to go with Buford, McNease and Lattin.
Now if they can increase ball penetration then a final 4 is within reach.

I just don't have high hopes for juco players. I like what I see from Lattin. And Buford having a redshirt year might be a plus.

I'm hoping that AK changes my mind but until we get a legit juco player, i just don't have high hopes for them.

OU basketball has been built from JUCO players...

And Oklahoma A&M won national championships. Its old news.

Juco talent now is not like it was back then. Its called Prep School. Its the new Juco. Not saying there isn't talented players in juco but its nowhere near where it was during your 'built on' years.

I look at it this way. When you recruit jucos, you aren't looking for a starter or a star, necessarily. You are looking for a role player, a piece to complete your team. Every once in awhile you find a Mookie or a Harvey or a Taj but you can usually find a Detrick or a Selvey. That is what AK is for at the very least, a very big piece to fill a role we need. Hopefully, he's more than that but I definitely think it is not too much to expect him to be a significant contributor next season.

You're right, juco recruiting is not what it used to be. Like you, I have cooled to some extent on signing junior college players. But, as KBaden said, you go the juco route hoping to fill specific needs, not to develop a roster.

Jameel Mckay has been a nice piece at ISU. So was Justin Hogue. Kenny Cherry filled an important need at Baylor the past two years. There are others, but you get the idea.

While I agree that you can't rely on juco players like Billy and The Tark, and even Sampson used to do, there are still some good players available. Manyang may turn out to be the one that finally wins you over, and brings me back to where I was two years ago when I was in favor of signing a juco recruit or two every season. The jury is still out on that one.

We both know that long, athletic 7 footers don't come along too often. So, there is no way you can pass on a player who has a chance to be a game changer protecting the paint. There simply aren't too many true rim protectors out there at any level these days.

Oklahoma A&M won championships 70 years ago. Taj Gray and Terrell Everett were playing for OU 10 years ago. Big difference.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the last time JUCOs had a big impact on our team was KS' last year. Capel just sucked at recruiting JUCOs.

I'm not saying there's not good ones but I'm just waiting to see before getting my hopes up. I'm glad that were bringing in other talent with a juco player.

And McKay was a 4* star recruit.

But prep schools have really taken off in the last 7 years. Capel has done a better job with jucos then Kruger. Washington and patillo are the 2 best we've had under the 2 coaches.

You're going back 10 years. That's your problem. Prep school has taken over the last ten years. Welcome to 2015

Baylor, ISU and (gasp) Kansas have all made Big 12 title runs with JUCOs during your timeframe but don't let facts get in your way.

How about those last two Baylor PGs?

AK is a consensus top 3 JUCO big and was #1 before he took a LOA.

He will be a fine.

I agree that JUCOs are watered down but to hyperbole it like you have over past couple of years is SMU laughable.

Grooms was definitely more valuable to the program than Washington...but I get your point. It's hard to believe the last JUCO impact players we signed (Gray and Everett) were more than a decade ago. Save for UNLV, no school in America is more historical in regards to finding JUCO players than OU. We should be able to land an occasional prize who can be one of the 3 or 4 best players on the team. I'm hopeful Manyang can be that type of player.

Correct me of I am wrong but wasn't patillo a transfer not a juco.

Juco. Came from College of Southern Idaho. Went to Western Kentucky after being booted off the team by Capel.

He played all of one semester at OU. 19 total games, averaging just under six points n 14 minutes per.

Last year West Virginia signed 4 juco players and they got 18.5 ppg out of them.

Texas Tech signed 2 juco players, and one of them became their leading scorer. Not a good team though. Their second leading scorer is also a juco player. 20+ ppg from juco players.

Baylor had 3 juco players last year and got 22.5 ppg out of them. Good production.

Iowa State has 2 jucos and got 12.5 ppg out of them.

Nowadays jucos typically fill roles, gaps, etc. You can get 3pt shooters out of juco, slashers, rebounders, defenders, role players, older guys, etc. You don't see too many well-rounded juco players that come in and act as your best player or best overall talent.

Mike Neal is a great example... that guy was an awesome 3pt shooter. Couldnt do much else, but he could shoot the lights out. Patillo had a lot out of potential to be good, and could have filled a role. Crazy athlete.

I am sure Manyang will be a good defender, shot blocker, and just be tall. I will be curious to see how he does compared to Anthony Allen from Oklahoma State.

Losing him was a huge blow to the following years team. He average 13 and 6 at Western Kentucky.
