AP Top 100 of All-Time

Wait, we are 14 spots higher than osu? But the local media always told me they were the better basketball program. How can that be?

Their retort is going to be the poll started in 1949 after their glory years.

Completely missing the point that those glory years were when most able bodied college age kids were off serving their country in Europe and Asia...

In terms of those programs who haven't won it all:

1. Illinois
2. Notre Dame
3. Oklahoma

The State of Oklahoma has four teams in the top-90.

20 ... OU
34 ... OSU
83 ... Tulsa
90 ... Oklahoma City University (OCU)

Brings back memories. OCU had some outstanding teams back in the day.

1972-73 .. NCAA Tournament
1967-68 .. National Invitational Tournament
1966-67 .. No. 1 NCAA team scoring
1965-66 .. NCAA Tournament / All-College Tournament champion
1964-65 .. NCAA Tournament
1963-64 .. NCAA Tournament
1962-63 .. NCAA Tournament
1958-59 .. National Invitational Tournament / No. 17 in final poll / All-College Tournament champion
1956-57 .. NCAA Tournament / No. 9 in final poll
1955-56 .. NCAA Tournament / No. 11 in final poll
1954-55 .. NCAA Tournament
1953-54 .. NCAA Tournament / No. 15 in final poll
1952-53 .. NCAA Tournament / No. 10 in final poll
1951-52 .. NCAA Tournament / All-College Tournament champion
1949-50 .. All-College Tournament champion

OCU's accomplishments must be considered against the framework of the NCAA Tournament back when OCU was good. The NCAA tournament has expanded a number of times throughout its history. This is a breakdown of the history of the tournament formats:

> 1939–1950: 8 teams
> 1951–1952: 16 teams
> 1953–1974: varied between 22 and 25 teams
> 1975–1978: 32 teams
> 1979: 40 teams
> 1980–1982: 48 teams
> 1983: 52 teams (four play-in games before the tournament)
> 1984: 53 teams (five play-in games before the tournament)
> 1985–2000: 64 teams

> 2001–2010: 65 teams (one play-in game to determine whether the 64th or 65th team plays in the first round)

> 2011–present: 68 teams (four play-in games before all remaining teams compete in the round of 64; from 2011 to 2015, the round of 64 was deemed to be the second round; beginning in 2016, the round of 64 is again deemed to be the first round)

NOTE: OCU moved to the NAIA in the early 1980s.

The whole Second/Third Round debacle. Good grief. So, so dumb.

Why did OCU go NAIA?

I'm sure money. Don't have to spend as much. And they can win championships much easier. Almost all the other small schools in Oklahoma have moved to NCAA Div 2, but not OCU. They can win 9 NCs in women's basketball in NAIA but wouldn't be able to in any other association.

OCU almost folded in the 80s and were going to sell the school the the OU regents. Then the Methodist came thru and alums to keep it going.

That's probably why this story won't wind up in either major metro newspaper. I was living in Albuquerque when ESPN did that "Top 65 all-time teams" list about 10-11 years ago, and I remember that OU was no. 12 and OSU was 32nd. So naturally one of the newspaper guys went on the radio and declared the list invalid because OSU wasn't ranked above OU. Or at least that was the scuttlebutt.

Interesting ND is higher. I always kinda assumed we were 2nd on that list.

ND has a hoops tradition below OU's...and it's not really that close. This particular list puts a lot of emphasis on how often a team is ranked. However, OU has 5 Final Four appearances and ND has one. That's a pretty significant difference. Since the start of the 64 team Tournament format in 1985, OU has been to the Elite Eight 6 times and ND once...again, way too big a difference to simply ignore. Obviously, this particular poll did not put much emphasis on the month of March.

ND was quite a powerhouse throughout the 1970s, so apparently that was enough to keep them ahead of OU. I know several ND fans and every one of them would be glad to switch hoops traditions.
