Four years, no tournament appearances. Another young “fiery” coach who was thought of as a sure thing when he made the leap to a P5 school bites the dust.

That one came as a surprise to me...not that he was fired, but that he wasn't successful at Indiana. We got a good look at him at Dayton when we played them in the Round of 32 six years ago. He guided them to the Elite Eight the year prior, won the play-in-game as an #11 seed, knocked out the #6 seed in Round One, and had us on the ropes in Round Two (thank you, Frank Booker!). I for one, thought he would do very well at Indiana.

Some very familiar names will surface for that job, most notably the head coaches at Baylor and Texas Tech. I wouldn't be surprised if Beard is offered the job.

The list of historically great programs that are looking up to Ou under Lon is long and distinguished. Off top of my head, Indiana, Arizona, UCLA, UConn, Maryland, nc state, Utah, st John’s, Georgetown, etc. all or most of those programs have invested much more into being successful than ou during the same time frame, too. Winning is hard.

Beard being part of the Knight tree would have a huge appeal to the fans up there, I would guess....

Uconn has 2 nattys in the past 10 years (and 4 since '99). They dont belong on your list.

UCONN also got screwed by being moved to the American.... They will be back now that they are in the Big East.

And Army was a vaunted football team for years. Things change. Gonzaga has replaced one of the teams on your list as so has Baylor, it appears. It's rather normal because a number of the teams you listed had success via a coach who stayed in these programs for years. Wooden, Knight, Valvano, Carnesecca, Majerus, Calhoun, Olsen et al. Perhaps the coach has more effect than the school itself. MacGregor golf clubs did pretty well when Jack Nicklaus used them and not so much when he retired.

Yep... You nailed it.

  • Indiana isn't a power anymore, but Purdue has been.
  • Utah isn't a power anymore, but Gonzaga is.
  • St. Johns isn't what they used to be, but Creighton is now a regular fixture
  • Georgetown faded... but Houston has come on under Sampson

Etc...

Archie can coach. He struggled more than anybody realistically expected at Indiana, but he'll land on his feet. If his background check clears, schools would be wise to keep him in mind.

Indiana is a train wreck w/ 2 split factions of fans, they are lucky it only really takes a few players to turn a basketball team around, maybe the new coach can hire a good players relative or they can get lucky w/ a transfer or two.

Yes I agree most of those programs can’t find coaches who can consistently make the tournament/finish in the top 35 or so. Ou has one.

Army isn’t any good anymore because they can’t compete financially/recruiting-wise. What is holding back a schools like UCLA/Arizona from being as good as OU? They have much better fan support and investment. There are a lot of bad coaches out there.

Arizona better buy some better recruits, can’t even make the tournament at least they have those major violations to look forward to

I don’t understand what’s going on at Indiana. Tom cream is a damn good coach and couldn’t succeed there. Archie Miller is a good coach and couldn’t succeed there. The last coach to have success was...Sampson, but that was short lived as he was forced to resign.

Just do I understand...Lon does succeed, yet should be put out like the garbage. Miller doesn’t succeed, yet is a good coach. Interesting.

Understood, but the other schools in that era had the same personnel makeup.

Not during 1943-45. The best athletes were drafted in the military. OU benefited from the athletes that came home being in their early 20s as young players because of this. A lot of the seniors in 48 were around 24 or 25 because they were coming back from either playing the backup football teams in the army/navy or actual battles in war including Bud Wilkinson serving and was on a ship that was bombed as I recall.

Pretty similar conference records over the past half-decade.
