Assistant coaches

On another board (primarily football) it was said Humphrey didn't really like Moser and was only staying because he was getting paid handsomely.

Have you "insiders" heard anything like this?

With the turnover on PM's staff, I could see him might be a guy who is hard to work for.

Also is Doc Sadler staying on as a full-time assistant? Did I miss that announcement?

I am dying for some good hoops news, but I am starting to lose all hope.

If Moser loses more assistants this year, it will be pretty damning evidence. Couple that with the abysmal on the court results and I would say it is time to move on.

As a Moser "supporter", I couldn't agree more with this point. I still am optimistic (against the belief of a lot on the board), but from a coaching perspective, you have to have assistants to be able to develop these players. Especially proper post-play and shooting. That is the only way to get shooters better and develop big men. Gym time, working on form, and repetitions. These assistants need to be in place in order to help these young men get better.

IMO, Moser has already demonstrated that his style and personality can be challenging for people that spend a lot of time around him. If you go to the games, besides his constant pacing you can see how involved and controlling he is in everything that happens. That style might work for some, or for guys like Dildy, Custer, or Gordon who have been under him for some time, but for a AHC that is looking to develop or to help move to the next gig, it may not work. Probably why there has been high TO on his staff, going back to LK's leftovers too. But assistants are crucial to build a program.

On the flip side, he is energetic, enthusiastic, and believes in what he is doing and the program. And it is clear he is meticulous in details and setting standards. Those are all great qualities of a HC. But if he lacks some openness to ideas, differing opinions, and feedback, it could cause a lot of strain in the coaches' offices and locker room.

I also believe that is a reason why some of the players have transferred that are head-scratchers, and why we have so many transferring out. Just not a fit for everyone.

All that works and is great if you are winning, not so much for what he's done to this point.

I listened to an interview last week with Paul Mills. He was asked why so many former Baylor assistants are doing so well as head coaches, and the main thing he emphasized was that Drew gave them all a ton of autonomy and treated them as equals. To the extent the rumors about Moser are true, it would make sense that guys don't want to stay on his staff long term. I know there are multiple ways to be successful, and I'm sure plenty of great coaches don't give their assistants a lot of say, but Moser doesn't have a good enough track record of success to get guys to stay if he is difficult to work for.

This is only a discussion point because there hasn't been much on-court success. Plenty of people have complained about working with guys like Saban, but nobody cares because he's winning. I personally don't really care how happy the assistants are as long as we can replace them. Assistant coaches should be forced to work hard enough that it's uncomfortable.

This might be a legitimate thing, but I'm not sure.

Is it these three guys we're basing in on? Could easily be a nothing-burger if so.

Dildy, Custer, and Gordon don’t seem to mind coaching under Moser. I would say it is TBD at best at this point.
