Welcome!

Would love to hear your thoughts on the matchup and your team. Far wiser posters than I will be happy to answer any questions on the Sooners if you've got any.

Is it Friday yet!?

What ever happened with that stupid rule the NCAA tried to impose on prohibiting india mascots and competing in post season?

Wouldn't that mean the Aztecs would have had to cahnge their name?

Since there aren't anymore Aztecs, there probably isn't a constituency that gives a rip.

There are no AZTECS left! Actually our BB arena is named and sponsored by the Viejas!

Aren't they Mexicans?

So the rule was you couldn't use an indian tribe that still existed? You really have to love liberals.

As basically anyone in America who isn't willfully ignorant of their continental history knows, the Spanish did a fantastic job of breeding with the indigenous cultures of modern-day Mexico. There are still some Mayans though. Opposing that name would be like opposing Trojans or the Spartans or the Saxons or the Vikings.

In other words they are Mexicans. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I especially like the part "as basically anyone in America who isn't willfully ignorant" comment. Thank goodness I am not willfully ignorant and knew that Aztecs and Mayans were assimilated into what is today Mexico.

The phrase "fantastic job of breeding" is quite disturbing. Humans breed animals not humans. I am pretty sure the Aztecs and Mayans didn't find the Spanish Colonization of their societies "fantastic". My understanding of history is that they were killed in wars, devastated by plagues and had their religion and culture destroyed by the Spanish. Very odd you would call this fantastic.

At the height of its power, the Aztec Empire was organized and strong, but ruled with fear. In 1519, a clash of cultures was to take place, unlike anything before it. Although there was much tragedy in both the Spanish and Aztec empires before this, the meeting of the two civilizations was disastrous. In a few short years, the culture and structure of one of histories greatest empires would have virtually vanished.

Well, the mayan calendar was wrong so maybe it wasn't just wars and plagues that killed them. :ez-laugh:

Yeah, I think all of this is an example of willful ignorance. Aztecs weren't assimilated. Their culture was destroyed, not absorbed. There is no Aztec ethnic heritage in present-day Mexico. You can't go to an Aztec reservation in Mexico or an area where the Aztec culture thrives because it doesn't exist.

As for the second part, just wow. Humans don't breed with other humans. OK. Obviously you like words to have only one meaning. Anyway, breeding is mating, and when one culture destroys another at least partially due to repeatedly bringing children into the world with them, I'd say breeding is more appropriately descriptive.

Some synonyms of fantastic: absurd, grotesque, incredible, ridiculous. I didn't really expect you to be serious though. You obviously just had a political axe to grind for no reason on a basketball message board.

I remember this board when most threads wouldn't get derailed by the first response. Sigh. I guess if we can work Marcus Smart's flopping into it we'll have a perfect thread. And Jeff Capel ruined the Aztecs.
