Big Annoucment from Pres Boren

We really weren't. I know we've been bragging for forty years about attracting so many merit scholars. It might have been because there was a monetary value that stretched far at OU with tuition rates. But, we weren't in competition with Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, or Cal Tech for the best prospects. Some of them have the resources to give scholarships to all freshmen if they wish. I saw recently that engineering majors at Stanford were being paid over $100,000 per year by industry beginning with their junior year. We can't compete with that. Boren was trying to set up maybe a group of 500 to 1000 that would generate that type of recognition. It creates opportunities.

Sorry, I said "private" and meant "public." I could be wrong about that too but thought I had read from more than one source that ranked OU with a decent ranking among public universities. This was during the last 5 to 10 years, I believe. At the least, I thought we had improved.
